dVerse — MTB — Winter Sparrowlets

Winter Sparrowlets

i
fairy feathers, snowy starlight
shackled inside crackled blue ice
former spacenaut, fallen treasure
earthly yellow friendly night light
surprised winter walker’s pleasure
snowy starlight, fairy feathers

ii
nightly walking, winter garden
pathlights shining on the water
voices echo as we’re talking
bouncing off a landscape spartan
dispels outside darkness stalking
winter garden, nightly walking

iii
winter beacon, silent singer
comfort us when long nights linger
induce hope, dear solo paean
perfume notes sweet crescent jigger
ageless lady of all seasons
silent singer, winter beacon

All 3 photos were taken at Frederik Meijer Gardens this past Tuesday. While most of the visitors stayed snug and warm inside, listening to two choices of live music while seated or wandering the indoor gardens, we decided to walk around outside for awhile.

Laura is today’s host for dVerse’ Meeting the Bar/Forms. Laura says:
And with this first MTB of February 2025 we are turning to an invented stanzaic form created by Kathrine Sparrow that she calls a variation of the Swap Quatrain. It was first prompted by Grace in 2022 namely the Sparrowlet.

I love the snowy starlight part…that is nice to think about…reminds me of 1977 when it was thundering and lightning while snowing.

I enjoyed your trio of winter sparrowlets, Lisa. In the first, the line that stands out for me is ‘former spacenaut, fallen treasure’; in the second, you evoked the nightly walk with ‘voices echo as we’re talking / bouncing off a landscape spartan’; and in three, I like ‘winter beacon, silent singer’.

The photos you share remind me of how beautiful wintry walks can be, no matter the discomfort when temps dip and snow is deep. Your poetry matches their beauty, Lisa.

Thanks for the lovely comment, Helen. They are! I’ve been out walking and snowshoeing this winter and even snowblowing, which is fun in its own way.

I remember one evening after a blizzard when the moon and stars were out, Hubby and I took a late evening stroll in the middle of the street – for about a mile or so, before returning home. When the body is layered and warm the cold intake of air is good!

It wouldn’t have been a good walk last night in the hail/freezing rain. At least at 36 F some of the ice is melting…
