dVerse — Haibun Monday — March Madness

“Night of the Crescent Moon” by Zana Brown

March Madness

It’s the season when skin flakes and bones ache. When one is cast away in a sea of snow and watery grey. It’s the season when moon pares to silver arc. A time when one slings mad hope at it with lasso’s faded memory of summer’s warm-spilled gold.

murder huddles high
in pine, dreams of shiny things
whippoorwill echoes

Frank is today’s host at dVerse’ Haibun Monday. Frank says:
write a haibun about March Madness.

If this line doesn’t evoke the essence of March madness, I don’t know what does! Beautifully done, Li!

Thanks, Frank. I tried to go more “poetic” rather than my usual narrative. Thanks for a great prompt.

  6. Your crisp style in the prose was so nicely done, short sharp sentences building up and a longer one flowing to finish, resulted in a rhythm to the piece I really enjoyed, and noticed. Like very much the way you used this in the descriptive prose. Lovely haibun, fine haiku, great read.

Concise, nicely formed, and beautifully written, Lisa. You’ve captured the season so well. I love the idea of being ‘cast away in a sea of snow and watery grey’ and the ‘faded memory of summer’s warm-spilled gold’.

What an impressive poem! The imagery is sharp and vivid – March as a season of physical discomfort and longing memories of summer. The metaphor of the moon withdrawing while hope is flung toward it with a “faded lasso” is particularly powerful – a beautifully melancholic image.

And the haiku is a little masterpiece in itself: the dark, lurking presence of “murder” hidden in the pines contrasts with the yearning for shiny things – while the whippoorwill’s call echoes into the night. A brilliant balance of nature, symbolism, and emotion.

Thank you so much for your detailed feedback. The murder is a group of crows, but they definitely can be considered lurking.

I always thought of March Madness as having to do with the basket ball playoffs… not anything that I am interested in though. So I’ll go with the ‘March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” :)

Jules, I learned from one of the other poets that March is a month to honor the god, Mars. It says so much about the mayhem (aka sports term.) We haven’t seen too much lion here yet, and no, I’m not disappointed ;)

Most of the months are named for the Gods… except for July – Julius Ceasar and August – for Augustic (Ceasar?) – they wanted their months in the good weather which is why Sept =septus/seven – isn’t the 7th month, or Oct= Octo/eight the 8th, or Nov= novina(?) 9, 11 or December- Dece=Ten, the tenth month anymore…
