dVerse Poetics Tuesday — First Window

First Window

Overbreathed, stale, closed system
where months feel like life sentence;
where clouds press on in suffocation,
denying screen’s supply of fresh new;
too afraid of price to skin and purse,
too blind to cost of lungs and spirit.

Called by muffled crows & kite-
straddling March lion glass, I reach
for latch and fling it aside, proud
for this one small act of courage.

Flood of vitamin D-charged fuel
funnels in through my tunnels to
flush out alveoli’s murky gloom.
My heartened bellows chug-a-lug.

Robin song heralds open season.
Not of rifles, bows, fleeing prey;
one of matte grey making way for
invisible puffs that resuscitate
color and vivre on either side
of first open window of Spring.

Heads up:  I LOVE THESE TWO TUNES by The Chieftains and The Punch Brothers. This whole album is a treasure.

    Oh what a feeling, the first time you open a window after months of winter’s stale air! You captured it well, Lisa. I love that even the ‘clouds press on in suffocation’, and the wonderful robin heralding open season.

    From suffocation to the the throwing open of the latched window and inspiration of fresh air, you took us there, Li, and how freeing it felt, the last stanza punctuating joy of life. The music was a bonus!

    A treasured moment, opening the first window of spring. We rarely open windows during the day all summer due to the heat, so we have that moment in late September!

    I had a window open last week when the weather was mild… not this week, Li, though above freezing temps come again tomorrow, followed by more cold on the weekend.

    I like the way you describe the experience, and the music is a pleasing accompaniment.

      Even one day of it is cause for celebration, Steve. Unbelievable but they are saying a high of 67 on Friday.

        I’m with you on that, Li. And celebrate we did!

        Our forecast now says rain on Friday, then below freezing again on Saturday. That should be interesting for our son and daughter-in-law’s moving day…

        Enjoy the 67!!

        Come, spring! ☀️

  13. A beautiful concept and moment..those first few lines were potent though, and left their mark, which is what you wanted, of course…I think you captured those moments rather than described them, which made them all the more intense…

      My pleasure, Sara! This past Saturday I had the sliders open and the heat off. This past Sunday we got about 4″ snow dumped on us. Today the snow is still on the ground but it’s sunny. Hope your weather is good today.
