A2Z 2025 — Day 4 — Doves

Doves

Mourning doves are plentiful in my yard.  I wrote a poem on them awhile back.

you may call them turtle doves; monogamous pairs
yet menage a trois at times, during courtship games
when wings whistle on take-off, flying fast and straight
they live thirty years or more and stay through seasons

their streamlined yet pudgy forms, of silk, milked cocoa
forage seeds with strut and peck, filling crop caches
to later roost and digest, safe and high in pines
side by side brown-spotted wings, cooing lullabies

Doves are a symbol of peace and devotion to me.

What symbolizes peace and devotion to you?

Smitha, thank you. Josna pointed out I forgot their coos in the poem, probably one of their most endearing features. I may have to write an addendum now as it’s bugging me.

I love to hear them coo in the morning, which is why, I suppose, people call the “morning doves.” They are not the brightest birds, they often try to build a nest in inappropriate places! If you can call a few sticks a “nest.”

Thanks, Lisa. It’s actually mourning, not morning. I’ve never seen one of their nests. Interesting!

That image of the doves on the ground was really interesting. I see them hear all the time in the trees, and hear their very distinctive coo, but I have never seen them on the ground or perched near the ground. Thanks for sharing.

We have lots of mourning doves here, though many less than pigeons. I don’t mind if they land on my window sill; the pigeons I shoo away. They are definitely more peaceful.
I often see them on the ground in Riverside Park. They like to hang out with the sparrows. (K)

  12. It is true that doves symbolize peace and devotion to me as well. I think of doves carrying an olive branch, and they coo so gently. Lovely post, Lisa!

Before we had to take down our birdfeeders so we could rebuild our deck, we had a pair of doves that visited every day. I love listening to them…

        I’m sure they are hitting up the neighbors. We hope to get our new feeders up soon but it will be in the backyard, not on the deck. BUT, I have a 20x zoom camera. {grin}

I had gotten rid of my last camera (gave it to my youngest granddaughter) after our Europe vacation and was using my iPhone. Then we planned another cruise to Alaska and I found this Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS25 on ebay in great condition. Most of my past cameras have been Panasonics. I grabbed it – then we cancelled the cruise. LOL! So I will try to use it more around home.

Was your husband prone to depression? Just wondering because it sounds like he was on the edge of it and feared falling in. Just guessing of course :(

I love watching the birds in my yard – mostly robins, I think. But they hop around with such purpose and I love trying to figure out what they’re up to! It’s also nice to wake up to them chirping in the mornings.

I love mourning doves, too. They’re so pretty, and the cooing never fails to make me feel better – a little like purring in that regard! Also, I love “When Doves Cry.”
