A2Z 2025 — Day 5 — Echinacea and Euonymous

Euonymous

Euonymous grows in the front of the house, one in front of each window and one in between the windows.  It’s a lush plant that grows very well and needs regular pruning.  It’s green until fall, when its leaves turn red like you see in the pic, which was taken at the end of October.  It has berries on it that some types of birds like to eat and I’ve watched them filling the one outside of the kitchen window and eating them.

This is a picture I took in 2015, also of a crab spider, but a different color than Charlotte.

Echinacea

Echinacea, or coneflower, are gorgeous perennials that come in many colors.  This one used to be out behind the house.  I’ve had others in other parts of the yard.  Unfortunately none are still living.  I learned that pine needles mess up the pH of the soil and only certain plants can thrive where they are.  Coneflowers aren’t ones who can.

What do red and pink bring to mind for you?

Thanks! It’s a Celtic coloring book that I colored. I could find the illustrator of the coloring book if you’d like it?

  2. You have a lovely blog – so colorful and so well-laid out. I got a Plant Identification app a few years ago, and it has proven invaluable on my walks and in my own yard. I think we have some shrubs that are similar to your Euonymous (what a funny name!) but I’ll have to double-check to see if they’re the same thing.

      Is this your app: https://identify.plantnet.org/
I use this one on my PC but not sure it has a free phone app. Google also has something like this that can be used on the phone. I think there are a lot of varieties of it but not 100%

A couple popular plants in our area, which given the geography makes sense. Great pics as always.

Randy, flowers and shrubs get around don’t they. Thank you and glad you have some of them as neighbors.

LOL, Melissa. This kind of spider literally does not move (unless eating, of course.) The jumping and running spiders that sometimes get into the house (not many) scare the HELL out of me. I’ve gotten quite good at catching and releasing them over time.

      1. I had one heck of a time getting a spider out of my car the other day.😅 I had a piece of paper, and I was trying to coax it onto the paper. It was jumping around.😱

I admit I was hoping that the spider was actually part of the inside of the flower! LOL!

Red reminds me of my mother because that was her favorite color. Pink…bubblegum. I loved Bazooka Joe as a kid.

That’s interesting about pine needles and soil. It makes sense though–pine forests do not have a lot of other plants growing in them. (K)

Good things to think of with those colors, K. The only thing I’ve seen growing in pine forests are ferns and coral mushrooms.

Yes, I think the tannin in oak isn’t good. Black walnuts also have something.

Allison, azaleas are shrubs I’ve never grown before, but my mom had a gorgeous one near their front door. She had to keep pruning it back. Thanks for bringing this memory to me <3
