dVerse Haibun Monday — September End Holiday

September End Holiday

They don’t bother waiting until dusk to come. They’ve learned the field behind the house and the backyard, where the fruit trees spread their heavy-laden arms, are safe for them and their young. Even so, they remain vigilant and know deep cover is close by if any sight, sound, smell feels of danger.

A few weeks ago, granddaughter played a game of carry fallen apples around the fence to pile them in the field. For them, it is convenience as they gather round it and crunch the fruit. Watching them settling in for the feed, it seems as if they feel free.

Christmas in autumn

give deer sweetest gifts.

Mish is today’s host of dVerse’ Haibun Monday. Mish says:  I’d like you to focus on “the fall”or “falling” as we write your haibun today. Choose one of the following themes for inspiration.
● The Falling of Leaves
● Falling in Love
● Falling Down (oops)
● The Fall of Society
Falling of Fruit or Nuts
● A Waterfall
● A Downfall or Decline
● A Free Fall Experience

  1. It sounds great for the deer to be fed like this… beware thought that fruit may ferment and leave the deer drunk.

It is a blessing for them. Funny to think of them getting soused on the apples. I’ll be watching them :)

Deer are such shy but very astute creatures, which you have captured in your haibun, Lisa. I love watching little children enjoy autumn, and watching the deer feeding.

Wonderful way of describing them, Kim. Last week at fmg they had some punkins out. Maybe tomorrow we will see if they have the punkin patch set up. We went to her school’s fall festival on Saturday and the kids were having such a good time.

How special this is to observe them close up. I like the reference to Christmas with red on green and “sweetest gifts”. Thanks for sharing the video!

Mish, sorry for the wobbly video. I was across the room when I saw one of the deer, so I started recording and walked over. Yes, they are here every night, either grazing in the field or up by the house munching apples. Thanks for the feedback <3

There are few things better than seeing deer eating apples out back. What a rare thing you have. Great memories for the little ones. To this day I remember feeding apples to deer with my dad and in turn did the same with my daughters. Thanks for conjuring up some wonderful memories Lisa.

Lisa. Max and I are working on a mini series featuring an aspect of women in music. We would like you to be a part of that by contributing a post. If you’re interested in learning more about it, I can send you the details and you can decide from there.

  11. I really like this, Lisa. I grow fruit for the fruit birds who come to our garden every year. They have become so familiar with the process, that it’s almost as if they come to check up on me as I prune, feed, and water their trees.

Your joy and awe at seeing the deer comes through. I hope your granddaughter remembers these moments–but if not, you do. It’s wonderful the deer have this safe place. When I see them at the park, I always want to tell them, stay here where it’s safe. 💙

The fallen apples attract wasps up here, and they came earlier in the summer this year. A little less active now, strangely. Fall is such a beautiful time, watching the vibrancy of colour before everything goes to rest. Lovely verse.

I haven’t noticed the wasps congregating around them. I’m also surprised I haven’t found a paper wasp nest anywhere on the property this year. There’s always usually one nest somewhere (may not have found it yet.) Yes it is a beautiful time of year. Thanks, Steve.
