dVerse — Poetics Tuesday — October Means

October Means

All earthlings glimmer via playful patina pixies
on blue washed or white mottled backdrops
squeeze-dried, sweetened, night-refrigerated
palette extremes of acorn brown to orange-
red flames. Welcome smoke puffs from chim-
neys and burning leaves, homely visitors that
cause jack o’lanterns to smile in resonance.
Flannel rebooted; merino wool caps knitted.
Fall festivals, parades, no-kings protests fill
calendars that pull us together as humans
before chaos holiday games season begins.

Dora is today’s host at dVerse’ Poetics Tuesday. Dora says:
What I’d like you to do is write a poem about what October means to you.

When you say “all earthlings glimmer,” Li, you show exactly what you mean in the common, homely, rich magnificence of October, its activities included. And yes, the “no-kings” protests do pull us all together which is an unexpected blessing, and about time.

    A beautiful vision of October–and I love

    “no-kings protests fill
calendars that pull us together as humans”

That fellowship of people who care is so important.

Yes, it is, Merril. I hope everyone turns out for it. I’m going to a training soon about how to respond if we are accosted or see others being accosted.

I hope they do, too. There are many No Kings marches/rallies in my area. I hope it will all be as peaceful as the first No Kings march.

Great use of seasonal colour, Lisa, in a poem packed with autumn. I especially love the smiling jack o’lanterns – and guess who is knitting again. No hats this year, though.

People will look back on the poems of this time ands see the politics creeping into poems that should have been pure celebration and will note the roots of resistance being put down – great write Li…

Andrew, well-said! I would love to see an anthology of them put together, just like I’d like to see an anthology of covid poems put together.
