dVerse MTB/Forms Thursday — Michigan December Tableau

taken the day before we got 8 more inches

Michigan December Tableau

coat, boots, hat, scarf, gloves
long strides punch tall drifts
garage lock’s unfrozen
blessing before task
backtrack holes to house
rehang keys on hook

shiny red beast primed,
plugged in, roars to life
churns into bright light
chute spews white river
coating cottonwood
until time to turn

round we go, circuits
heated grip warmers
ease arthritic joints.
county plow mountains
flattened to access --
until their next pass

done, the beast rehomed;
auger cleared, it sleeps
'til fallen snow calls
tired operator
unbundles for tea
waits for company

Laura is today’s host for dVerse’ Meet the Bar/Form Thursday. Laura says:
And now we come to the prompt for composing a poem in the manner of a tableau: i.e. “a carefully composed scene in which characters are arranged for a picturesque effect, acting entirely oblivious to the viewer.”

  1. I can’t imagine surviving in such weather. That trip to the garage would’ve done me in for sure. A lovely write Lisa.

Petru, it’s having to trudge back to bring the keys in that is the worst, but I can’t take a chance they will fall out of my pocket. Thankfully the snowblower faithfully starts each time since I started putting “rec gas” into it. Glad you enjoyed the write :)

A beautiful cold and snowy tableau, Lisa. You really took a hit with the last front that came your way! Stay in and stay warm.

Dwight, we’ve gotten blasted a few times so far, and way more and earlier than last year. I wouldn’t mind staying in, but I have things to do and visitors coming over from time to time. As long as the snowblower starts I’m a happy camper.

Welcome to Life in Michigan in Winter :) I actually just looked Trinidad and Tobago up on a map to see where you’re at. You are in Paradise!

Colleen it was a perk that came with this snowblower. I’m grateful for it. Have you seen hot paks you can put in gloves? They are SO nice!

All hail the almighty snowblower, Lisa! I don’t know what to expect for us this year as far as snow is concerned, but winter here did begin much earlier than normal with regard to the temperatures. Our snowblower has been a trusted member of the family for several years now, and we try to keep it happy so it keeps us happy…and safe. Stay warm…and yay for hot packs in gloves as required!

I think where I’m at in MI and where you’re at in CAN is close to same longitude and both near Great Lakes, so it makes sense. Yes and yes. Thanks, Grace, you also.

Ahh the trusty snow blower. haha Worthy of poetry to save from breaking one’s back shoveling. 😁

Stew, I’d have a heart attack if I tried to shovel this much snow. Back when I lived in the city it was a fairly short driveway and sidewalk. Whole different game out here in the sticks.

  9. so very visual Lisa -“long strides punch tall drifts”

I also like how how you used the 5 syllables to make a list poem in parts

p.s that is proper snow – the best kind. We often have too little that quickly turns to slush

Thank you for the feedback, Laura. You might say I was setting the table? Yes, it hasn’t been a proper snow that past couple of winters here either. I think I snow-blowed once all last winter. This winter, I’ve already done it 3 times.

Wea re getting a good 8-12 as I read this, on top of all that we have already had! I will be walking this same path later on this morning. I love the way your words brought a trek in deep snow to life like this for me.

V, I’m glad you are getting a good snow, which means we have a chance of surviving a little longer. I think anyone who has done it will recognize it. Thank goodness for machines at times like these. Stay warm, my friend. Faces get the worst of it. I have a total face mask for blizzards, but so far haven’t used it this year :::knock on wood:::

It’s a very physically active poem. This old body hurts the day after, being so out of shape. If it keeps snowing like this, I will be quite fit by the end of winter :)
