2025: the year in reading

Since I stopped using Firefox for my browser, I lost all of those cool apps I had, like screen shots.  I can’t figure out how to get an app that works on the PC that will do screen shots on Duck Duck Go, so I went the mechanical way and took pics of the books I read this year.  I have to say I read a lot of good ones!   I actually read more than 29, as I started a couple and just couldn’t finish them — and I tried!  There are still some being read, like the current DiscWorld book and Chuck Palahniuk’s latest.

If you want a closer look at the books, my goodreads link is here.  Just checked the link and you have to sign in to goodreads first to see it.

Also, I have started reading Women Who Run with the Wolves by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola-Estes again.  The first time was in 1992 and it was a transformative text for me.  Now I’m reading it for a book club starting in January.  It will be interesting to read it with fresh eyes.  A friend of mine says that there is a workbook out there for it and a series of YouTubes covering chapters.  I’m getting geeked for it.

How has your reading journey gone this year?  Care to share any of your favorites?

Great post. I like to reread with “fresh eye” as well. I read 35 books, just shy of my goal of 36. But ,the year is not over yet. My favorite book for the year was, A man in Full, by Tom Wolfe. Happy reading!

Hey Benn! Nice to see you. I liked seeing your posts on fb and miss them since deleting my fb account. Thanks on the post. Books can be such good companions. I’ve never read Tom Wolfe, but I will add this one to my to-read list. :) I would say the Margaret Atwood trilogy was my favorite for the year. SO GOOD!

I saw an interview on FB with Margaret Atwood, very good. The weird thing is that I read her books waaaay back in the 80’s when I was an avid reader. Now my eyes don’t let me read so much but I listen to audio books. Back then I liked “Cat’s Eye” much more than HT.☺️

Cheryl, she is a sharp cookie. I’ve read some of them back then too, including Cat’s Eye and HT. I saw a comment by somebody about her books, saying the Madd Addam trilogy was flying under the radar but so good, so I gave them a try. OMG! I hear you on the reading thing. Audiobooks are a godsend, and so are e-readers where you can adjust font size and they are backlit in any brightness. I haven’t done many audiobooks but my love of reading has been energized with my e-reader. I liked HT but so depressing!

Astrid I almost never re-read books, but it’s been over 30 years since reading Women Who … One of the few books I re-read was Dracula by Bram Stoker.

  7. Well done, 29 is quite a lot! I only finished 12… from your list, the only book I have read is The Vegetarian which is a really great book. I will use your list as inspiration for next year’s reading list. Thank you.

Agoes, since I got an e-reader, it has allowed me to read much easier, as my eyesight isn’t what it used to be and I’ve resisted getting glasses.

Thanks for sharing your list. I liked The Vegetarian also and felt so sorry for the protagonist!

I actually managed 33+ books–I have reviews to write for 3 I think. My biggest category was poetry. Reading a couple poems every morning evidently adds up. I would like to read more fiction. Maybe next year…

I like that they do this. I was hoping for 40 books but not bad. (K)

Paul, I’m not surprised you know her work. I have a series of lectures of hers that a friend gave me that are marvelous as her voice is as magical as her insights are.

About the selection, I have to agree with you. This may be the best year yet for excellence in writers.

My reading of books has decreased a great deal in recent years, Lisa. I think that is the sacrifice to watching so many shows and sports, and of course getting out to the movies. That being said, it sounds like your e-reader has made things a lot easier and more efficient for you, so maybe I will try that in 2026. That being said, I always have loved the feel of the physical book in my hands. A re-read of Dracula sounds like a good time in any format!

For some years after getting out of college I was burned out from all of the forced reading, and then my eyes started to weaken. I’m back in the reading saddle again and loving it. Another cool aspect of e-readers is that you can borrow ebooks from the library that instantly download if you’re linked to Overdrive or whatever program your library uses. I love hard copies also, Bruce, and I will not be getting rid of the ones I have and will continue to buy hard copies. Dracula stands the test of time for sure.

I’m a very slow reader, but I got through Bono’s book (after your recommendation). I started on an Alex Howard book on childhood trauma, but didn’t get far with it. The Vonnegut short story collection I told you about is about half-done. I think I may stick with short fiction for the time being.

Bono’s book is going up on the shelf with my other Bibles (The Bible; I, Me, Mine; The Madd Addam Trilogy; Nobody’s Girl; Thy Neighbor’s Wife.) (oh, and all of Tom Robbins and Chuck Palahniuk’s books) Will try to get to Vonnegut’s short stories sometime in 2026.
