What Within Us?

what within us?

white men, dark suits
red ties, white shirts
army of pain dealers
tearing apart our homes
leaving us to wander,
wonder
what within us
keeps us chained
under such vile rule?

Steve’s post today inspired me to share a poem I’ve been working on for a few days. Please take a few moments to read Steve’s post and my poem. It matters.

A great question, Lisa. As long as 46% of the voters think this is the way to go, not much will change any time soon!!

Here’s something that might cheer you up (thanks to Paul Krugman for the link on his substack today)

I SAW THAT YESTERDAY and it made me laugh and cheer at the same time. (Are you on substack?) Thanks for thinking of me <3

It really brings home the point that Mother Nature is stronger than humanity and its stupidity.
I’m on substack only to comment but I subscribe to Paul Krugman’s newsletter so I get an email every day. He is good on trying to understand economic issues and has great musical codes.
I also get Letters From an American which examines things from a historical and social perspective. Mainstream news is mostly useless these days.

    2. This is funny. The situation is not.

Lisa’s question “what within us?” Is the bit that’s got me flummoxed. How are 70-90% standing for this?

Because at this stage standing for it to pass, feels the same as endorsing it.

Sorry to sound so absolute on this. But WWIII may have already begun.

Steve, I can’t argue with any of it. I’ve continued to go to protests, continued to give $$ to people running for state and US congress, continue to write about it, continue to share info as it comes to me, worked at dem hq in my town during the 2024 election, continue to sign petitions, etc. MI state leaders keep trying to fight off Fed obstructionism. The corporate democrats are lackies and refuse to unify with those across the aisle who know the madness we are facing and that keeps escalating (every day I get a job search email from the fbi asking me to apply to be a border patrol or ice agent.) At this point it feels like you are right about WWIII.

Steve, thanks, you are also. Do you know what may be the worst part? Is seeing massive mayhem on screens, but step outside of the door and it is perfectly normal. It’s huge cognitive dissonance.

I agree–I know lots of people who have just tuned out, and I think it’s just as bad as endorsing it.

What got me most about the video is the ultimate truth of it–that the natural world is much stronger than humans are and after we go down in flames they will find a way to carry on. I think we are doomed, but I can’t give up a tiny shred of hope which is why I will not give in.

So many things are keeping us chained- most of all- an inbred desire to live a non-violent lifestyle. Very thought provoking piece. I also think, proximity, logistics, and the desire to not allow this administration to provoke us into a situation that can be used to our supreme detriment.

Good question Li, I wonder that there would be multiple reasons if we scratched the surface.

Precisely, Paul. I’m sure each of us has our own reasons. I believe that MLK Jr. said (paraphrasing) “one who passively accepts an unjust system becomes an active participant in its evil” As you probably figured out, my plea goes to us passive ones.
