Quote of the Day from Pádraig Ó Tuama

So let us pick up the stones over which we stumble, friends, and build altars. Let us listen to the sound of breath in our bodies. Let us listen to the sounds of our own voices, of our own names, of our own fears. Let us name the harsh light and the soft darkness that surround us. Let’s claw ourselves out from the graves we’ve dug, let’s lick the earth from our fingers. Let us look up, and out, and around. The world is big, and wide, and wild and wonderful and wicked, and our lives are murky, magnificent, malleable and full of meaning. Oremus. Let us pray.  —  from Pádraig Ó Tuama, from, _Daily Prayer With the Corrymeela Community

I’ve been following Tuama’s substack, Poetry Unbound, for a little while. His posts resonate with me, so I decided to buy one of his books. This is a daily prayer book. The above quote is from the intro, which describes the Corrymeela Community and what the format of the book will be. The prayers themselves are very short but very powerful, the kind that set a prompt to think about where you can take it from there to personalize to your situation. There are also set morning, afternoon, and evening prayers that I think the community prays together each day. At the end there are multiple prayers for specific situations. I’m just about done with the first read-through, but this is a book to keep within reach, meant to be read again and again.
I highly recommend the substack and this small titan of a book.

  1. Beautiful cover art. It reminds me of the cover of The Startup Wife.
