Looking for pics, I came across this one that tickles me pink. Image link
St. Patrick’s Day in Michigan 2026
White waves whoosh along overcast scene
making it a bit tricky trying to imagine green
swath of shamrock, dandelions, and crocus.
I try to bound up and click heels in my head;
only weary, opting to fetal curl up in my bed.
In other years’ celebrations, toasty-cheeked,
cheered, our flag raised down at Henesseys.
The pub closed during Covid and was bought
by Catholics to grow next door’s church base.
No more open mikes with friends & Magners.
Our Irish American Society greys and shrinks;
yet autumn Festival continues its expansion.
There’s something about being emerald green
once a year, each a Darby O’Gill, that thrills.

Thanks for a look into your local. I enjoyed it.

Many years ago, I lived just outside Kells in a tiny place called Moynalty, which consisted of a couple of houses surrounded by farmland. I also saw the Book of Kells in Dublin – beautiful. So it was interesting to read about St. Patrick’s Day in Michigan, Lisa – and to see that you had a pub called Hennessey’s – there are lots of them in Ireland. I think my daughter had a bit of a celebration – she was born in Ireland and has an Irish passport – but I’m still too ill after partying with her and the boys recently for Lucas’s birthday; I came back with a chest infection.

Kim, the reality that you lived outside of Kells and that your daughter was born in Ireland makes my day. I had a lot of good times there while it existed. If the church hadn’t bought it, it might be opened again by now.
We have a replica of the Book of Kells in our downtown library. I read they turn one page a day.

I could picture it in my mind back before Covid, and the church buying it. Though not exactly the same exterience, I shared many rambunctious Irish whiskey and dance a jig nights! Your poem definitely represents that Irish aura from back in the “daze.” Awesomely done! And I loved the theme and prompt!

I love that animation. St Patrick’s Day here is too political, and totally entwined with the Catholic Church. But who doesn’t feel the pull of Irish culture, it’s stories and art? (K)

K, very sorry the holiday has become politicized there. I know the church here buying up Hennesseys has me p-ed off, as it had become our favorite watering hole. They had delicious perch dinners on open mike night and the place filled right up. My friends’ band played and so much merry making went on. Yes on feeling the pull of the creativity of its people. I’ve watched that movie many times.

That photo is intriguing. I attended the local St Patrick’s Day parade over the weekend and someone colored the horse feathering above the hooves green. It is a color that catches the eye immediately. Thanks for hosting and sharing a piece of your world.

Once a year for emerald green may seem miserly, but at our age we’ll take what we can. And ennui for the lost makes the emerald gleam more preciously. Love your Paddy Geronimo! (He’s black, too? that’s a subtext …)
