#FFF 73 — Fox and Socks

A couple of weeks back, I met up with both sons for a delicious meal at El Arriero (daughter in-law and granddaughter were unavailable.) The plan was for older son and I to hang out at Schuler Books, which is nearby the restaurant, until younger son texted us. I’m used to going to Barnes & Noble bookstores. Schulers is independently owned. Think of B&N — and then elevate it to next level. Same stuff but more of it, better, and cheaper. They will even publish your books and put them for sale on their shelves in a special section. I grabbed the flyer but haven’t had a chance to look at it yet.

They sell doo-dads, book-related and not. There were a couple of sock company offerings. My eye immediately went to the Michigan ones. Great Lakes Shark Sock Co. is based in Pinconning, MI, up north. Besides being MI made, the fabric content is 80% cotton, 15% nylon, and 5% Spandex. To me this is a great fabric combo! Cotton is king to me, but I understand the need for the other if you want them to stay up and last. The designs are creative and colorful. And… the price was right! I bought one pair and tested them out. Yes! Light and comfortable!

I followed the link to the website and ordered more. Two pair for myself, one for DIL, and one for granddaughter.

A couple of weeks went by and I didn’t hear anything, but I have plenty of socks and so didn’t worry. At the beginning of the week, I got an email from Kevin Shark, one of the owners of the company. Kevin apologized profusely, saying his family is in full swing with making maple syrup. He said he’d get the socks in the mail right away.

The socks arrived today. Because of the delay, Kevin threw in 3 extra pairs! Over the week, we bounced a few email back and forth and I learned that yes, his family name really is Shark, but in this case, he’s a warm and fuzzy one. Kevin, if you see this, THANKS AGAIN!

Hope those socks don’t bite! I used to spend a fair bit of time in independent but mostly used bookstores. I had accounts set up at about three or four of them. Then slowly over the years watched most go out of business. There’s still one of them downtown operating for 50 years now. But I never go down there anymore.

Independent bookstores are becoming an endangered species.

It was good to spend time with my brother and sister-in-law. I’m a terrible traveler though; I still feel disoriented.

  5. What a cool place…it would be a cool thing to put a book of yours in there for sale…. I hope that can work out.

Yes, it is! And it is very busy also. Yes, I will need to write a book first and do some research on it. I do also, Max. Thanks for being such a consistent supporter of my writing <3
