dVerse Q251 — Bonfire

Bonfire

Marshmallows,
puffed up squishy gangs,
want to stay that way;

But as is in the way of things,
their pasty conglomeration
is not to remain.

Skewer-stabbed, one by one,
soft white skin chars,
blackened and crisped,
force compressioned
between chocolate
and graham
into goo.

I am today’s host of dVerse’ Quadrille Monday, where we are to write a 44-word poem using some form of the word puff.

  1. I have never really understood the charm of grilling marshmallow… maybe it is something you aquire as a child.

We grew up on Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake, where we had picnics at the beach a lot. That is standard fare. We used long pointed sticks, first to roast the hot dogs, which also got burnt black, then for the marshmallows for smores. Yes that taste reminds me of childhood.

The best marshmellow is found in a hot chocolate..in my humble chocolatey opinion ;-)

Nicely written 👍 I can imagine the grilling marshmallow. Bonfires are amazing as long as they are harmless. Beautifully written! ☺️

Thank you, Aptivi. Ours were more small daytime campfires on the beach, but I like the idea of a bonfire at night on the beach.

Lisa, campfire s’mores are the best kind of s’mores. Well written homage to the staking of the beloved marshmallows as they transform into something very special.

      from wiki:
“A s’more is a confection consisting of a toasted marshmallow and chocolate, sandwiched between graham crackers. In a typical preparation, the marshmallow is toasted over a campfire, and the heat of the marshmallow melts the chocolate, fusing the sandwich together. “

When my sister and I were little, we sometimes toasted marshmallows over a burner of the stove. My mom probably didn’t know. 😉

Thanks, Merril. We never had them inside the house, but I bet your mom could smell them bubbling/burning. As soon as this drought is over I’m going to build a little fire outside and make s’mores.

It’s night here, a winter chill, I just put a another log on the fire, but I have no marshmallows to skewer. We always took them camping – such fond memories. I like the implied metaphor I read into puffed up squishy gangs, cannot remain so, and skewered, may it always be so 😀
