Female Animator Exhibit at Muskegon Museum of Art

This past Sunday some of the family went canoeing and some of us went to the Muskegon Museum of Art. One of the exhibits was about female animators. It included many drawings, colorings, and biographies by them. They had kiosks set up that showed some neat early ones, including “silhouette animation.”

They also set up a sectioned-off theater showing a series of old cartoons. I remember seeing this one before and falling in love with it, having no idea the animator was female:

Here is another one by a female animator that they had on the reel. See if you can you pick up on the female perspective:

Jim your interpretation makes me laugh. He didn’t want to take no for an answer. I like this animator giving the message that no means no.

We did Lotte Reiniger for a KA prompt awhile ago (2021) I had to look up what I did–a birds diorama. These are great–thanks for posting them. (K)

Kerfe, happy you are familiar with Lotte and have created art inspired by her. My pleasure on sharing them.

  4. That looks like a fascinating exhibition – and I have admit kind of eye opening. While it’s really silly, it didn’t occur to me there were female animators! For some reason, I always associated film animation with men!

Christian, I totally understand that oversight. Maybe that’s why they had the exhibition? My daughter in-law is a good artist and I wish she would try to do something with it. My son is also very talented illustrator. Granddaughter has picked it up from both of them. I think I need to do a post of granddaughter’s doodles. Thanks for the comment and the inspiration for a post :)

When I remember the dates for these it still blows my mind that these are so good and stand well next to the current standard. Positive perspective.

  6. Wow! The film about Lotte Reiniger was fascinating! Silly Symphonies were my childhood introduction to orchestral music. Thanks!

Glad you enjoyed the post, Steve. They were mine to a large extent also. My mom did buy me a couple of classical LPs that I listened to with fairy tale accompaniment, so an extension of sorts. I remember listening to Bambi and Peter and the Wolf on LP.

Subdued and gorgeous to me also. Very calming for young children and young at heart adults. It was so neat to see the originals close-up.
