If Thine Eyes…
Ronnie’s feet tremble twice a day.
A year ago…
Ronnie refuses to listen, to see; to feel.
But God won’t leave him alone.
Some consider relentless harassment of the senses as torture.
God doesn’t care; insists, 24/7.
Knitting needles in his ears make him pass out.
Lye in his eyes hurts like a muthafucka.
Setting himself aflame leaves tender nerve endings.
Three strikes and you’re in.
Ronnie feels safe in the psych ward. God leaves him alone.
~~~
Ronnie is home now. God has mercy on him, visiting only at blue hour. The trembling is comforting. He listens; and feels.
[100 words]
blue hour: Blue Hour is the period just before sunrise and just after sunset when the sky takes on a deep blue hue, offering ideal lighting for photography and atmospheric views.
Note: studying the image, I see what looks like two eyes in the sky and the sun as a mouth.
Methinks if Ronnie stayed on the meds consistently, “God” wouldn’t visit so often.
Yoinks! That’s a tale for the season… I’m revelling in Blue Hour right now as October is the time of year my after work dog walk can get the sunset on the hilltops if I’m really quick. Tonight was cold but majestic.
Thanks, Steve. Having a furry companion along keeps the gloom away I think.
The thoughts we have and the things we do often defy understanding. Disturbing but excellent psyche piece, Lisa.
You’re so right, Nancy. I think isolation tends to enhance those “defiant thoughts.” Thanks much.
it must be tough to live under such conditions—tough for him and tough for those around him.
Dale, thank you very much. Somewhere out there such a person exists, I’m sure of it.
So well penned, Lisa. My husband worked in a psych facility at one time and came to understand why the recidivism rate is so high. There is order and a feeling a safety for those who fight continuously against demons in their mind from trauma they’ve endured. It’s very sad.
