This is my Halloween offering for October Write Poetry Month, so beware, it is frightening.
Each night, as I walk home from work,
Passing the empty brick mansion —
Tapping
~ ~ ~
Tap-tap quickly, a pause, then TAP
tap-tap pause…. Then TAP, perhaps a
Message?
~ ~ ~
My curiosity piqued, my
Sixth sense says keep walking! But still —
Must know.
~ ~ ~
Some nights faint lights stir in windows
Each night, tap-tap, pause…. TAP —
Louder.
~ ~ ~
Night frost on empty windows shows
Strange symbols interwoven. There! —
My name!
~ ~ ~
As the full moon approaches, my
Dread at passing rises, yet pulls —
Must know!
~ ~ ~
Tonight, full moon, I choose to stop.
Stepping closer, eyes and ears strained —
Tap-tap…..
~ ~ ~
A rustle above, a sharp pain.
Wings, a bloody beak, and red eyes —
I wake.
I like the rhythm brought by the repetitions…
