Day 9 — Love Bird

The poetry form, Etheree, consists of 10 lines of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 syllables. Etheree can also be reversed and written 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Get creative and write an Etheree with more than one verse, but follow suit with an inverted syllable count.

Reversed Etheree: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Double Etheree: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10, 9, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

…Triple Etheree, Quadruple Etheree, and so on!


It’s a beautiful fall day out there.  The windows and doors are open and the birds are having a party out by the bird feeders.  With today’s OctWriPoMo prompt being love, it’s only natural that I combine the two into today’s offering, a Double Etheree:



Sweet bird,

Flown from Heavens,

Goddess’ best, precious gift,

Has alighted upon my shoulder.

Soft multi-hued plumage, graceful curves,

It rubs its beak against my neck

And begins to sing notes from its home.

It flutters to the treetop and tells the world!

Hopping about, it finds the perfect nook of a tree.

It gathers twigs, grass, and the soft fluff from dandelions.

With admirable concentration, it weaves the twigs and grass,

Then lines its nest with the dandelion fluff.

Day after day it proclaims its intentions.

One day seven speckled eggs appear,

Then seven helpless chicks appear,

Then multi-hued plumage.

They soon fly.

Their memory

  1. I liked it. I used to be a sucker for typographical poetry, so it’s a nice callback for me also, but more than that, I like the imagery of this. It’s sweet, it’s cute, even, but also somehow majestic – the bird itself, almost mythical, but still fits into the palm of your hand. It’s a very spring type poem in autumn, is what I’m saying.

  2. thank you very much for your kind words. they are appreciated! the seasons have been kind of messed up this year. i see spring flowers going into bloom and saw a new butterfly out there this afternoon.

  3. I loved the image you chose, and the imagery in your poem. I could see the bird, perched on your shoulder, as if hugging you.
    I LOVED this line “and begins to sing notes from its home”
    It gives this sense of travel, homesickness yet also pride, the will to share where you come ftom, that I have experienced so often, living abroad…

  4. Your etheree makes me miss the bird songs in the morning. Since it’s turned off cold where I live, the birds aren’t singing anymore. So, to me, the poem is bittersweet and makes me long for springtime.
