Sunday morning haiku

pheasant

Getting ready to build the morning fire, I stood up from the wood burner and looked outside.  I saw a brown lump out by one of the fenceposts that isn’t usually there.  When you spend a lot of time staring at a particular place, you immediately notice if something is different.  I walked closer to the window to get a better look.  Glory be, it was a ring-necked pheasant.  Today is the first time seeing one here in all 8 years of seeing so many other critters.

Not being much a photographer with my phone, I chose the pretty picture at the top for the post, but below is what I captured with my phone:

pheasant by fence

Of course the pheasant inspired a haiku.

Morning pheasant feasts

white ring bobs with food and fear

tawny feathers gleam

I waited to go out and get the firewood, because of course I didn’t want to scare the lovely critter away.  Looking out a little later, he was gone, so I thought it was ok to go out.  He had just moved down the fence line and we made eye contact before he slowly sauntered for a bit as if he hadn’t a care in the world, until he got a little away then he speed walked into invisibility in the tall grass out back.

We see each other

he saunters in false bravado

then powers away

The second photo looks like an artwork eg. oil painting.

I wish it was :) It was taken with my cellphone and through a window, so it probably gave it that effect.
