A double entendre is a word, phrase, etc. that has two meanings, one of them usually of a sexual nature. There are two songs I want to talk about today that I think are double entendre songs. First I will link the video, then the lyrics, then my thoughts about it. If you want to make it fun, before reading what I wrote, try to imagine what the other meaning might be.
The first one is Peter Gabriel’s, “Kiss that Frog”
Kiss That Frog
Jump in the water
Sweet little princess, let me introduce his frogness
You alone can get him singing,
He’s all puffed up, want to be your king
Oh you can do it, c’mon c’mon c’mon c’mon c’mon c’mon
Lady kiss that frog
Splash, dash, heard your call,
Bring you back your golden ball
He’s gonna dive down in the deep end
He’s gonna be just like your best friend
So what’s one little kiss, one tiny little touch?
Aah, he’s wanting it so much
I swear that this is royal blood, running through my skin
Oh, can you see the state I’m in
Kiss it better, kiss it better
Get it into your head
He’s living with you he sleeps in your bed
Can’t you hear beyond the croaking
Don’t you know that I’m not joking
Aah, you think you won’t, I think you will
Don’t you know that this tongue can kill
C’mon, c’mon, c’mon, c’mon, c’mon, c’mon
Lady kiss that frog
Let him sit beside you, eat right off your plate
You don’t have to be afraid, there’s nothing here to hate
Princess, you might like it, if you lowered your defence
Kiss that frog, and you will get your prince…
Jump in the water, c’mon baby jump in with me
Jump in the water, c’mon baby get wet, get wet, get wet
Kiss that frog, lady kiss that frog
Get wet, get wet

OK did anything present itself to you? The song was released in 1992. I wasn’t on the net until 1995 so it was sometime after that, but after buying the CD it was on and listening to for awhile, the other meaning came to me. I threw my theory out there in whatever usenet group I frequented and was scoffed at. I decided to write the Peter Gabriel fan club or whatever it was at the time and ask them if Peter intended the other meaning. They denied it in writing. If I ever come across (i.e. find hard copy in my hoarding realm) their written response I will post it.
My theory is that its first meaning follows a classic fairy tale about the princess and the frog from Grimm’s Fairy Tales (1905) and is probably a lot older story than that.
The second meaning is a man asking a woman to give him oral sex, or perhaps asking to do “69” with him. This could also be a man asking a trans-woman for the same.
OK, now that you know my theory on this song, what do you think?
The second song is Cake’s, “Short Skirt Long Jacket”
Short Skirt Long Jacket
Cake
I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes
I want a girl with the right allocations
Who’s fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack
She’s playing with her jewelry
She’s putting up her hair
She’s touring the facilities
And picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket.
I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete, to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass
She is fast, thorough, and sharp as a tack
She’s touring the facilities and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long, long jacket
I want a girl with a smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At City Bank we will meet accidentally
We’ll start to talk when she borrows my pen
She wants a car with a cup holder armrest
She wants a car that will get her there
She’s changing her name
From Kitty to Karen
She’s trading her MG for a white Chrysler LeBaron
I want a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket

The first meaning is that this is a “super yuppie”. My theory on the second meaning is that the song is about a hot cross dresser or, like the first song, a trans-woman. Knowing my theory, and re-listening and re-reading the lyrics, what do you think?
I’ve only heard the Kiss that Frog… I thought it was about the fairy tale…now I’m not sure lol.

You’ll never think about that song the same way again 🙂 What did you think about the other one?

I remember the group and that singers voice from Sheep Go To Heaven I believe… but not this song. It’s good but I like the other one better.

I don’t know them well…I know them for that hit and that voice is unique so that is a compliment. I knew it as soon as I heard it.

My son and I went to see them in concert at Royal Oak Music Theater, which is near Detroit, probably 12 years ago. It was a small place and we were very close to the stage and it was the best concert ever. The whole audience knew all of the words to all of the songs and we sang them like a mantra. The energy was amazing.

That is cool. I was going to ask if they were good live…you answered the question…

They are one of the VERY few big groups I’ve seen.

Wouldn’t it be something to win the lottery and choose your dream line-up and have them put on a concert for you? You’d probably have to go get some of them with the time machine…

With me yes I would… Back to the Cavern or Hamburg to see The Beatles
Or the sixties to see The Who

Question for you: when you were saying my comments were in a spam folder, were you talking about on WP or in your email account? I just found a bunch (50) messages in the WP spam folder, but half were not spam. Very aggravating!

WP …not my email. Now you know what I’m talking about! it is frustrating. People think you are not answering them on purpose or something. Most of mine that is caught is not spam….don’t get me wrong I would rather be careful but… I check mine now everyday

I like Peter Gabriel but out of the two songs I like Short Skirt Long Jacket better. I may not be qualified to interpret what these songs are about.

I’m not sure what, beyond your own knowledge and experience base, would qualify you… Take a guess.

Both songs are sexually suggestive, but I am not certain about the transsexual or the cross dresser meanings, although that does make sense.

Ah, yes. Thanks for your thoughts on it. It is further validation that my mind hasn’t gone bad, or at least that bad.

Definitely agree on the frog song, though I never heard it. Have heard the Cake song a million times… interesting idea! Sure, why not? 😀

Yes! Glad you can see. Both have bugged me. Never put my theory on the Cake song out there before…

I love them. Love their covers of Strangers in the Night and Ruby too

I have Gabriel’s song on my playlist and I thought – as you say – it was pretty obvious, and a very clever double entendre, the second – I can see how that would work. 🙂

Ok. I prefer the long jacket song.
Both have double entendre in my opinion, quite clearly.
To me the frog is obviously his penis.
The second, when she’s playing with her jewlry, toiling with her hair, touring the facilities, faster and faster… it’s about a woman masturbating.
I don’t get the crossdresser or trans vibe, I’d be interested to know how you see it.
Thanks for taking my mind off bad things. Hoping I go right to sleep now!

She’s a high maintenance girl (playing with jewelry, toiling with her hair); touring the facilities and taking up slack (exploring the man’s body, which causes a reaction in a certain appendage), looooooooong…. jacket (suggests a well-hung cross dresser), gets up early stays up late uninterrupted prosperity (male virility dressed as a woman), voice like tinted glass (LOLA), enough?

Okay, to me jewel is her clit, hair is down there, facilities are her vagina… shés rimming herself, going faster and faster. She’s got some liquid going on and he enjoys seeing her fingers going in and out, up and down. 😊

I don’t know that first one, but that second one always struck me as a song about a TS/TV.

Yes, and symbolic language is such a part of music , one must be open to it’s interpretations !

The thing that leapt off the page (no pun intended) about the Frog song was the line “get wet, get wet’, which is another sexual entendre. Women who are ‘prepped’ to have sex are often wet in their private area and some men like a LOT of juiciness, so they’ll ask ‘are you wet?” …it’s sort of nasty actually. 😐
The song by Cake might refer to a prostitute too, OR some woman without panties wearing a mini skirt. The long jacket is a sort of cover up to the fact that she’s there and she’s bare. My take on it anyway.

Both good interpretations and both possible. I was thinking maybe 69 on the first one because of the “get wet, get wet”. Peter Gabriel denied it way back when but who knows he might admit it nowadays….
