Although this story is fiction, kind of, it’s based on fact.
Ghost Ducks
White in snow they waddle
nibbling stalks for seeds.
Night time finds them sleeping,
nestled in the reeds.
They dream of duckweed and
June bugs, for morning ducky talk
White feathers are their snowy shield
Invisible to the hawks.
Their feathers, also thick and warm
shield them from the cold.
No flying South to warmer climes
the ghost ducks live so bold.
One day the sun, it melts the snow
and brown grass turns to green
frozen dirt turns into mud
and yes! The ghost ducks
are seen!

I loved writing this poem. A neighbor about 3 miles from here has a pond with hills on all side, where a fence has been built around it, I guess as a protective shield for their ducks. They live in the pond year-round. When I saw the picture I thought of them being invisible in the snow :)
