I listened to Leonard Cohen: Live in London, or at least most of the first disc. There are some intense songs on it. Not knowing much about Cohen’s music, I learned that it’s dense; not a fluff or throwaway in the bunch. My selection from it is, “Ain’t No Cure for Love,” originally on I’m Your Man (1988), which was Cohen’s 8th studio album.

per wikipediaLive in London is a (double) live album by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. It was released on CD by Columbia/Sony March 31, 2009, is his 18th album, and his first live release since Field Commander Cohen: Tour of 1979 in 2001. A DVD of the performance was simultaneously released by Columbia/Sony. Part of the reason Cohen, who was 73 at the time, went on tour in 2008 was to rebuild his finances after being swindled by his manager Kelley Lynch.

I loved you for a long, long time
I know this love is real
It don’t matter how it all went wrong
That don’t change the way I feel
And I can’t believe that time is
Gonna heal this wound I’m speaking of
There ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure for love

I’m aching for you baby
I can’t pretend I’m not
I need to see you naked
In your body and your thought
I’ve got you like a habit
And I’ll never get enough
There ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure for love

All the rocket ships are climbing through the sky
The holy books are open wide
The doctors working day and night
But they’ll never ever find that cure for love
(There ain’t no drink, no drug) ah, tell them, angels
(There’s nothing pure enough to be a cure for love)

I see you in the subway and I see you on the bus
I see you lying down with me, I see you waking up
I see your hand, I see your hair
Your bracelets and your brush
And I call to you, I call to you
But I don’t call soft enough
There ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure for love

I walked into this empty church, I had no place else to go
When the sweetest voice I ever heard whispered to my soul
I don’t need to be forgiven for loving you so much
It’s written in the scriptures
It’s written there in blood
And I even heard the angels declare it from above
There ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure, there ain’t no cure for love

All the rocket ships are climbing through the sky
The holy books are open wide
The doctors working day and night
But they’ll never-ever find that (cure for love), that cure for love
(That cure for love)
(There ain’t no cure for love)
(No cure for love, there ain’t no cure for love)

Cohen “not fluff” is akin to British understatement. :D I am addicted to his last album (released not far before his death) and will play “You want it dark” on loop for quite a while. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0nmHymgM7Y

Wow does he have Benedictine Monks backing him up on that? Interesting and definitely “not fluff” ;)

I agree entirely. ‘Tis a hard thing to find an artist yet never know which one of his songs one would name ‘best’ for all are wonderful.

I love the wolf (canine) its a clever abstraction aided by your colour. But Cohen is majestic – always.

I wasn’t sure how to color the odd bits they threw in there so I went bright. Cohen is one I don’t know well but what I’ve heard is, as you put so well, majestic :)

Paul, I”m almost embarrassed to admit I have two of his CDs, “Cohen Live in Concert” (not London), and “Songs of Leonard Cohen”, but have not listened to either one much or if at all. ::blushing::

I am not in general – a fan of live albums but this is fantastic- my favorite Leonard to listen to- he sounds great on this. Wish I had seen him in concert.

I borrowed it from the library after reading your review. His banter between the songs is priceless also. He’s the kind of entertainer who would be perfect for a small nightclub and some martinis :)

Glad you liked it.. I think his voice got better as he got older which-well is usually the other way around .
