Wikipedia says: “If I Fell” is a song by English rock band the Beatles which first appeared in 1964 on the album A Hard Day’s Night in the United Kingdom and United States, and on the North American album Something New. It was credited to Lennon–McCartney, but John Lennon often stated that he wrote it. “That’s my first attempt at a ballad proper. … It shows that I wrote sentimental love ballads way back when”, Lennon stated in his 1980 Playboy interview. However, Paul McCartney stated that he contributed to the song: “We wrote ‘If I Fell” together.” This was Kurt Cobain’s favourite Beatles song, and was played by Nirvana whenever there were technical problems at their concerts. This song has been covered by at least 24 well-known performers (see wiki for who they are.)

A bit of trivia from songfacts.com: The Beatles performed this in the movie A Hard Day’s Night. It was used in a scene where they perform to a group of school kids in a theater. The kids were all borrowed from nearby schools, and had no idea they would see The Beatles. On of the kids was 13-year-old Phil Collins, who didn’t make the final cut, but was given outtakes with him in it years later when he contributed commentary for the DVD release of the movie.

If I fell in love with you
Would you promise to be true
And help me understand
‘Cause I’ve been in love before
And I found that love was more
Than just holding hands

If I give my heart to you
I must be sure
From the very start
That you would love me more than her

If I trust in you oh please
Don’t run and hide
If I love you too oh please
Don’t hurt my pride like her

‘Cause I couldn’t stand the pain
And I would be sad if our new love was in vain

So I hope you see that I
Would love to love you
And that she will cry
When she learns we are two
If I fell in love with youWriter/s:

  1. So many people prefer their latter era, from ‘Rubber Soul’ on, and absolutely idolize that and later albums. For me, though, I plum LIVE for the early days. ‘If I Fell’, ‘Do You Want To Know A Secret?’, and so many early songs of theirs are absolute masterpieces, completely underrated.

Those old albums are the ones I grew up with. Music was and continues to be a bright spot in the world for me. I love the old ones also, and I love watching those old videos of them performing.

What a wonderful Beatles song- one of my favorites from A Hard Day’s Night… too bad though The Beatles never really made it as big like Slim Whitman.

Slim and his cohort, Boxcar Willie. It’s a real shame.

There is no surpassing The Beatles. When I listen to their music it has been imprinted. One day when they fully map genes, they’re going to find John, Paul, George, and Ringo brands on mine.
