This is a CD I listened to many times before putting it in the CD rack, where it’s been sitting for awhile. It’s got jazz and country, not mixed, songs. There are some fun ones on here, notably the jazz selection, “Here I Am,” which is a duet with Francine Reed. There are a couple of standout songs, one of which is Lyle’s rendering of Tammy Wynette’s, “Stand by your Man,” where he refers to the man in third person. It is an outstanding cover. I am not choosing that one today. Another standout is today’s choice, “I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You.” I love love love Lyle’s voice, which is old time country.
Lyle Lovett and His Large Band is Lyle Lovett’s third album, released in 1989. Lyle Lovett and His Large Band reached number 10 on Billboard’s chart for Top Country Albums, and 62 in the Billboard Hot 200. At the Grammy Awards of 1990, Lovett won the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for Lyle Lovett and His Large Band.
Its not the words
You know I’ll always love you
It’s not the words
I wish that I could stay
It’s more the way your lips looked
As you spoke them
And how the moonlight fell upon your face
I married her just because she looks like you
And for every time you said no
She says honey I’ll be glad to
And for every time you left me
She says darling I’ll be there
It’s not the words
You’ll get over me
That made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like you
And if I had not searched for you
I never would have found her
And if I had not loved you
I would never have known love
It’s not the words
Please try to forget me
That made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like you
And for every time you knocked me down
She reaches out to help me
And for every time you cursed me
She says darling I love you
It’s not the words
Time heals everything
That made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like you
Songwriters: Lyle Pearce Lovett
Love that album- but it was one that threw me at first- Lyle’s first two were more country music based- this one as you wrote has some jazz influences for sure. I wish Lyle were more active in recent decades only 4 albums this century with the last one being in 2012. Have you seen him in concert? He puts on a great show. Great selection.

This album is the only one I’m familiar with and not sure how I bought it but am glad I did. No, haven’t seen him in concert.

I got married to my wife because she did not like onions.

I hope you’re joking, but if you’re not, it’s as good a reason as any, I guess.

It worked for 22 years and we both still hate onions.

If it worked for 22 years, why not 22 more?

Lyle is a great country singer…but like Hans said…wonder what he is doing now? He probably would not get played now though.

Just checked out his website. He’s still going strong, and performing almost every day!

Some just aren’t making albums now…there is no money in it anymore unless you are the flavor of the month

It is weird how the music world has changed. Musicians are traveling troubadors again, living gig to gig, hoping to sell a few t-shirts and CDs at their shows…

I know…probably wishing they would have come out two generations ago…but yea playing live is it now.
