Coloring Club Plus — 10/11/19 — Aerosmith’s Permanent Vacation

Oct 11

I listened to this last night and was surprised by two things: how many bad songs are on it and how many good songs are on it. It isn’t an album I listen to much. This morning I was trying to decide which “non-hit” to highlight from it and rejected each one for various reasons, which left me with my favorite song on it, Angel.

Per wikipedia:
Permanent Vacation is the ninth studio album by American rock band Aerosmith, released on August 25, 1987. The album marked a turning point in the band’s career. It was their first to employ songwriters outside the band, instead of featuring songs solely composed by them. It was… the first Aerosmith album to be promoted by heavy music video airplay on MTV. Though Done with Mirrors was intended to mark Aerosmith’s comeback, Permanent Vacation is often considered their true comeback, as it was the band’s first truly popular album since their reunion.

Angel was released in 1988 as the third single from the band’s successful 1987 album Permanent Vacation. It quickly climbed to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, which at the time was their highest charting single ever. The song currently ranks second behind the 1998 smash “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”, which was Aerosmith’s first single (and as of 2019, only single) to top the Hot 100.

I’m alone, yeah, I don’t know if I can face the night
I’m in tears and the cryin’ that I do is for you
I want your love
Let’s break the walls between us
Don’t make it tough
I’ll put away my pride
Enough’s enough
I’ve suffered and I’ve seen the light
Baby, you’re my angel
Come and save me tonight
You’re my angel
Come and make it alright
Don’t know what I’m gonna do about this feeling inside
Yes it’s true, loneliness took me for a ride
Without your love I’m nothing but a beggar
Without your love a dog without a bone
What can I do? I’m sleepin’ in this bed alone
Baby, you’re my angel
Come and save me tonight
You’re my angel
Come and make it alright
Come and save me tonight
You’re the reason I live
You’re the reason I die
You’re the reason I give
When I break down and cry
Don’t need no reason why
Baby, baby, baby
You’re my angel
Come and save me tonight
You’re my angel
Yeah, come and make it alright
You’re my angel
Come and save me tonight
You’re my angel
Come and take me alright
Come and save me tonight
Come and save me tonight
Come and save me tonight
Come and save me tonight
Come and save me tonight
Songwriters: Desmond Child / Steven Tyler

  1. I bought this album at the time and it remains the one I listen to from Aerosmith in phase 2. The title track is good also…and their cover of the Beatles “I’m Down”

  2. Have you ever once liked an album or band- hadn’t listened in years and then listened- and found you didn’t really care for it that much? I have always thought Aerosmith owed a lot to Run DMC for their comeback…

  3. Yes I have. Several years ago now I did a purge and traded some CDs in for different ones. There was a really good used record/CD store in town at the time and he took them 2 for 1, so every 2 cashed in could be traded for one of his. Some he had so many of he wouldn’t take them. Not sure if I brought them back home or gave them to goodwill. My CDs could probably use another purge. You know I remember that Run DMC video and have to agree that did seem to put Aerosmith back on the radar.

  4. I know the term “hoarders” is in vogue right now. When I still had cable tv I watched some episodes of the series. I have a bad tendency to hoard, and stacks and boxes things are around me, so I wanted to see how they handled it on the show. One universal for every hoarding situation involved having a person come in and coordinate a crew to take the stuff away and the person whose stuff it was was nowhere around when it happened. With my stuff I think I’ve always had it in the back of my mind that I was saving this stuff to pass on to my kids. As time goes on, I see they have no interest in most of it. I really think once I accept it isn’t being saved for them it will be easier to let loose a lot of it. Of course I’m not ready to accept it yet, so here it all sits.

  5. I need to get a book on this subject and read it. The basement is so cluttered with boxes of books [ I do have bookshelves upstairs with hundreds of books but not enough room for any more bookshelves] that I can’t find things- I need to sort them out and get rid of stuff I am never going to look at let alone ever read. I am at the point where I will buy a second copy of a book at a book sale simply because I can’t find the copy I do have–it’s crazy and it is at the point where I am annoyed by it. ERRR! And as you pointed out – it’s not like there is anyone close to me who is interested in taking this stuff if I ever go.
