#MM Saturday Mix — Only $5!

Could you resist me?

My roomie in college’s combination of impulsiveness and kind-heartedness, in retrospect, led to the worst and best days of my life. The day we walked down to the convenience store and saw the cutest little red-headed girl sitting on the curb with a rattling, scratching box, Mimi couldn’t resist the tiny mutt pup for “only $5!”

When I reminded Mimi that no pets were allowed in the dorm, she was quick to say our space was roomy and the RA of the unit was only there for the free housing and didn’t care what we did. She popped the pup into her beach bag purse and we picked up puppy chow and a packet of rawhide chews at So Quick’s.

The biggest challenges with Mini Mimi were keeping her quiet and disposing of her waste. The first night was the worst as it was M&M’s first night without her siblings. Mimi and and I took turns playing with her until she collapsed, exhausted, in my arms.

With the waste, we set up a corner of our room with scrap paper on the floor and a wall of waste- and laundry-baskets, with stacks of books (a much better use than when we used them in class.) The moment she woke up we popped her into the corral and soon she learned the routine. Unfortunately Mimi didn’t, and I ended up playing toidy duty for our little princess.

It’s funny when I look back at how small M&M looked in the box when Mimi chose her. My thumbs and index fingers would easily fit around her waist. By the end of our winter term, those same fingers couldn’t meet around her neck! Her fur was a thick honey brown with white spots. She had a brown and white mask and a curly tail.

Soon it was time to go home for the summer. M&M kept pulling clothes out of my suitcase as a game and chewing on my shoelaces. I wanted to be upset but I laughed instead.

Are you gonna miss me, girl?”

Mimi walked over to me as if on cue and said, “Li, there’s something I wanted to ask you. Billy has asked me to bum around Spain with him this summer, and my folks are in Greenland right now. Do you mind keeping M&M for awhile?”

Why was I not surprised. “Um, sure, I guess Chauncey and the cats won’t mind one more.”

Now you the reader won’t be surprised when “awhile” turned into forever. I decided to transfer to a campus closer to home to finish my schooling, and M&M and the rest of the tribe mauled me every evening when I got home. She lived a good long life. Her arthritis slowed her down and her eyes grew rheumy, but she never lost her puppy spirit.

When she passed on, after the tears dried, I wrote Mimi a long-overdue letter, thanking her for the day she bought the best $5 bargain ever.

This week we are seeing double with ‘Double Take’The ‘Double Take’ challenge focuses on the use of homophones* to build your writing piece. You have two sets of homophones and you are challenged to use all of them in your response – which can be poetry or prose.  Our homophone sets this week are:

rheumy – having a watery discharge of mucous
roomie – colloquialism for “roommate”
roomy – lots of space

and

waist – between ribs and hips
waste – make ill use of

    1. I picked the cutest one with the coloring I as thinking of. The story is fictional for me as far as dogs, but I’ve had a number of cats walk into my life on their own, including this latest one 2HL. He scratched me yesterday when I was petting him and it drew blood. We’ll see how his attempted capture goes…

      1. I thought it was true until I read someone’s comment…
Yea it takes a different kind of patience with cats…at least I’ve seen that. Totally different with cats and dogs except for one thing…they both need love.

        1. This message did not go into spam. I was away from the computer much of the day today. Needed a break. Cats are not obedient, but they can be trained. Don’t ever try to herd them though 😉

            1. I just checked spam folder. Nothing in there. On another topic, I was watching Billy Strings live at Del Fest last night (on youtube.) My former co-worker/friend was watching it also and we were texting back and forth. She told me that she and her daughter Ashley saw Billy Strings live at The Ryman a few years back, on their way to The Cavern.

              1. I need to go to the Caverns. I’ve never been there it looks really cool. You are the one who told me about it!

Have you ever been to the Ryman? I can’t remember you saying.

                  1. Ok… I remember you posting him… I just listened to some songs. Some bluegrass in there. Sounds really good…
so much better than the new commercial acts.

  1. This sounds totally believable…I had a roommate who used to leave her dog with me (that was before my body decided to be allergic) when she went off with her latest boyfriend. But she took him home in the end. He was a great dog though. (K)
