dVerse — Quadrille 121 — Winter’s Embrace

Original Woodcut Winter Sleep image 0woodcut image, “Winter Sleep,” by Yumi Kawaguchi,  from DogwoodStudioAlaska

Snow embraces trees
who embrace winter as
winter embraces land.

Land sleeps, a cave
of cold-warm that cradles
curled furred dreamers,
cryo’ed reptiles, seeds.

All seeds sleep. Some
feed hearty plumed and
scurried, pulsing with
life despite inert season.
Many wake to Spring bloom.

What a joyful hibernation song! I love the oxymoron: ‘a cave
of cold-warm’ – it mirrors the effect of the whole poem, which should be cold but somehow feels very warm!

:) YES! I worry though because winter got such a late start that it will stay longer. Oh I hope not.

Wow, Lisa, this is a stunning piece! I feel as if I am a petal watching and waiting for the rest of nature to bloom over me, it’s just that consuming and beautiful in your imagery.

    “Snow embraces trees
    who embrace winter as
    winter embraces land.”

Don’t ask me why, I immediately thought of Walt Whitman here but maybe because of the repetition, I guess? Kind of reminds me of something he wrote. I really don’t know but it’s beautiful and it’s one hell of an opener! :)

I love the theme of waiting in the darkest moments to embrace spring when it eventually arrives. Just that endurance to bloom, it sends off a message of hope, in my opinion. Such lovely writing. <3

Hibernation, what a reality. The bear have it down pat. Your poem has both the heft of a winter mantle, and the zest of life beneath in slumber, dreaming of Spring.

Kate, the poem built itself as my stream of consciousness had its way. I started thinking of plant seeds as equal partners to the “mobile life” on the planet. Can you tell I’ve been cooped up too long ;) I don’t want to know where it will take me next. Feeling sorry for covid? lol
