Music that strikes a chord — Drug Dealer, by Macklemore (featuring Ariana Deboo)

The first time I came across Macklemore was with this song, which I fell in love with.  Looking for more of his stuff I came across this one and loved him even more.   Out on a youtube search for something I happened across this one and knew right away I wanted to share it.

Macklemore is rap music but rap music of a human-hearted and socially conscious nature.  I daresay that every person who hears this has either been in his shoes or knows someone who has been.  When we have the government-sanctioned MDs getting people hooked on death-dealing addictive medications, you know something is very very wrong.

A few years back, when I was just getting used to riding my motorcyle, I had a fall going fairly slow when I tried to ride over a gravel patch section of road being repaired (no warning signs, no orange cones, nothing!) I cracked a couple of ribs and had to go to my doctor for a follow-up appointment.  He said, “here” and handed me a prescription for Vicodin with 2 refills.  Within a matter of days, I was getting addicted, and as the time approached to take the next dose approached, my whole body hurt as if I’d been tumble dried with rocks.  I dumped the pills (which I should have dropped at a prescription disposal center, but I didn’t know it was a BAD idea to flush them down the toilet at the time.)  Never again!  That said, the number of people I’ve known both casually and very well who have started out with an injury, surgery, etc. who end up getting hooked on these “legal” pills is astronomical.

When I had my knee replacement surgery, I was prescribed tramadol both times but I didn’t take it for the fear of addiction. Plain paracetamol did the trick for me.

I admire you for resisting it and glad the non-addictive remedy worked for you.

I was afraid that I would be hooked so I never took it. Thanks

My daughters and I just had a discussion about an article we read about high school kids who take these drugs simply for..oh because they are kids I guess–and get hooked. Too readily available, both from doctors and on the open market. As my older daughter noted–“They have nothing else to do”. We need a major cultural overhaul.
    I like Macklemore a lot also. (K)

Mind altering substances permeate our culture, and anyone who doesn’t use any form of them is considered an oddball. This supports your belief that we need a major cultural overhaul. I think in the olden times there used to be a holy person that would “take the trips” and bring the info back to the tribe. I don’t think these substances were ever meant to be used by everyone in the tribe.

I think Macklemore is a hottie and the boy knows what he’s doing with his music ❤

The balance between individual and community is off. If people saw themselves as working members of a community they would never be without something to do.

Amen! I watched a youtube yesterday (you know how the rabbit hold of youtube goes) about a guy in NYC that started adopting the dirt wells around trees. I think they said he was up to 22 of them. He pulled his cart with water and plants and tools along and maintained them — in addition to his day job. That’s just one man. You are so right!!!! How do we get back to that (if we even ever had it?)

Our neighborhood association (3 residences ago) used to plant bulbs in all the tree wells on the street. It doesn’t take much sometimes.

Are you all moved in to your new place? If so, how are you liking it?

I’m somewhat overwhelmed. I need to slow down (the Oracle’s advice for the day also). But it will be great when I get it together.
