Consumed
On lonely nights I see you there
when moonlight steals into the room
or candles flicker in the gloom.
When all’s asleep but me and you.
When dawn’s song seems so far away
on sleepless nights, I hear you there,
the creaking board upon the stair;
your scratching in the ceiling tile.
When mist is thick along the ground
and seeps between the window cracks
on chilly nights, I smell you there,
a haunt of rose, a whiff of hell
Your skin so pale! your eyes so dark!
They called you witch, put you to spark.
Your screams yet fill my love lost dreams;
consumed each night, I join you there.

As we, Mrs. Jim and I, have aged we awake more and more in the middle of the night. Often nearly at the same time. My rule, “if being awake lasts more than 30 minutes, get out of bed.” It would be scary for me to be alone in the one you describe, just the two of us. My worst personal fear is being alone with a woman taller than I am. If one comes in from another floor stop I will get off at the next. I feel scared even writing about that.

You definitely reflect the mood and spirit in the image. I especially love the “..haunt of rose, whiff of hell..”and the scratching in the ceiling. This time of year the darkness draws in, and our minds have come up with a lot of rituals and religious elements to deal with it, Day of the Dead, All Soul’s Day, and so forth. It’s a part of our psyche. if you don’t speak to it, I think you lose something of what we are as humans and as writers. Loved this one.
