Jumping Feed Issue and Jumping away from comment boxes — is this happening to you?

WordPress 5.5 Sitemap Bug Causes 404 Errorsimage link

For a few days now if I’m reading comments in the notification column I can see the feed jumping.  When I’m reading posts I clicked on from the feed and try to comment on it, the post keeps jumping away and/or to another post’s comment box.  I remember before it happened an “allow WP pop-ups” popped up and I clicked allow without thinking.  Now it has become like a very annoying virus that I can’t get rid of.  Max (at badfinger20) is having the same problem.  What I want to know is how many others are being affected by this glitch?  Please leave a comment here and also report it to WP help if you are.

The following is the chat conversation I just had with the help line:

Me:  I’ve been having problems with my feed “jumping” randomly. The posts in the feed have started jumping from post to post automatically, including when I’m trying to type comments on posts. This has been going on for days. I do remember when a “pop up” showed up asking if I wanted to allow pop-ups on WP and I stupidly answered allow them and that’s when this mayhem started. PLEASE HELP

WP:  Hi there! One moment while I read your request.

Me:  ok

WP:  Let me take a look for you. Please give me a few minutes.

[several minutes go by]

Me:  hello?

WP:  Hi there!

Me:  Have you found anything yet about my messed up news feed?

WP:  Oh! It looks like we lost our chat. I’m still looking. While I look – do you know how to open an incognito or private browser window? I’m curious if the issue persists there.

Me:  No I don’t

WP:  I do notice when I click on the comment field, it opens the specific post which kind of looks like scrolling – is that what you’re seeing as well?

Me:  it isn’t happening all of the time. it isn’t happening right now. while looking at my notifications sometimes the feed is randomly jumping. it’s jumping right now
it is now opening the posts in order that are in the feed

WP:  Oh! It’s okay – I see a bug report for this was opened today – so you’re not alone. 🙂

Me:  Oh I know

WP:  I take it the community might be talking about it? 🙂

Me:  my friend at badfinger20 is one
oh we are talking about it alright

WP:  I’ll bet!

Me:  impossible to function with reading and commenting this way

WP:  I can imagine. It’s got to be exceptionally frustrating.

Me:  we have started typing comments in our notepad and then copy and pasting quickly before it jumps

WP:  Yikes!

Me:  you need to get this fixed. where are the settings where I can turn off “allow popups”?

WP:  That doesn’t appear to be the cause of the issue, since I’m seeing the same problem.

Me:  i’ve looked for where it is and can’t find it. could it be a virus?

WP:  No, not at all – it’s an issue that our developers are actively working to resolve.

Me:  so you are seeing what i’m talking about?

WP:  Yes, absolutely, and I’ve added your comments (including your mention that it’s impacting your community) to the issue.

Me:  can you do a “restore” to a time before this bug went active?

WP:  It’s not something specific to your account, and the developers will do what’s best to get it resolved as soon as they can. That could be a code revert or something similar. But, I’m not a developer, so I’d hate to provide incorrect information.

Me:  I hope they act fast. As much money as I pay for this account to have it be like this for days is quite disconcerting, not to mention anxiety-producing and annoying.

WP:  I agree! What’s most concerning to me is that our first report only came in today. But, I can see the report is set to high priority.

Me:  I know my friend reported it yesterday.
have you been told to tell us that only a few isolated people are affected by it?

WP:  No, is that what they were told?

Me:  no, but you are responding in exactly the way my friend said the person he chatted with responded: totally surprised and no knowledge of this bug

WP:  Well, it is the start of my day, so it’s possible I personally missed the announcement today. But, I went to our bug reporting system and I can see that the issue was raised to our developers.
I’ve created a ticket so I can email you with updates on the issue.

Me:  Good. Please do it soon. Thank you.

WP: As soon as I have an update, you will as well! Thank you. 🙂

Yes, this has been happening both on my phone and laptop. It’s super irritating and my immediate suspicion is that it’s deliberate to keep us on the site longer. IT LITERALLY JUST HAPPENED AS I TYPED THIS. Twice!!! It’s actually more annoying on my laptop because there the comment “jumps” into another blogger’s form. Here on my phone it just asks me if I want to leave the page. WP is so ridiculous lately!

Another thing that has been happening lately is I have to hit the back arrow many times after commenting to return to where I was reading in the feed. Half the time it simply refreshes to the top. ARGH!!!

They need to do a “restore” or whatever the rep called it asap. Being taken to the top of the feed is a major hassle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gee Ms’ you have got the patience of a saint there with that wp team – I’d probably have thrown the phone… and I am glad you got to the bottom of something. I have had a bit of that but, tbh put it down to my laptop being 5 and my inbuilt mouse doing erratic things as well. 🙂

I was in a chatbox for the conversation or maybe I would have thrown the phone. Lol. What irritates me is when they act like they are just now hearing about it. Pleading ignorance is a chicken response, no offense to chickens. Maybe your glitches are your old equipment but it sounds like it could just as well be the WP glitch.

The WP peeps are not always on the ball. I hate that you can open your notifications bar and as you are going down it, it jumps and disappears. Then I have to go through emails or the Reader or just go to my blog and see what comments I missed. If a response on yours happened and it jumps, too bad, so sad. I don’t always catch them!

Well a ticket was supposedly opened with me last night. She had no clue that it was happening. I recorded what happened and uploaded it and yea…I got the YIKES after that. Yikes must be a WP support buzzword. It’s very hard to believe…no one had reported this…since it’s been going on last Friday. I haven’t heard anything back yet.

Well you see how many have commented that are struggling with it. And that’s just in our neck of the WP woods. There are millions of blogs. I find it hard to believe their tech support people were unaware of the issue, especially, like you said, since it started on Friday. Don’t they have a way to do a “system restore” for the code somebody injected in there to mess it up?

I just read an article about WordPress on Friday saying there were holes in security and they had to be shut. An update could have happened. Many programs have a rollback feature without messing with peoples data…but who knows with them.

I’ve tangled on numerous occasions with WP help. At one time, their phone app was doing weird things. I sent them screen captures and everything. Every time I got an email from them (several), I was always talking to a different person. I was lucky I kept the email address. I forwarded it to Max and he jumped on it. It’s nuts that WP didn’t even know that the Reader was acting weird…comment sections, when typing, were making pop-ups of “do you want to leave this page” show up. Sometimes, it would throw me to another blog. It was weird.

I read, somewhere, that WP plug-ins were causing problems.

Too many code monkeys, playing around.

Vic, you know the terminology better than I do. I think, since WP bloggers for the most part hang out in a fairly small section of the site — only so many hours in a day! — that we forget how vast it is. I really wonder how many developers and happiness engineers they have….

I dont use the reader to read posts, so I’m not experiencing this problem, but the happiness engineers are really awful! I mean, we pay for our accounts, well you do, and I do. The last you’d think they could do is fix problems quickly and not spout off a lot of bs about our developers are trying, yada yada yada. xoxo

  11. While my feed wasn’t jumping, I also had a hard time when trying to enter comments. I would repeatedly get kicked out. And, yes, sometimes, I would find myself in a different post! This only happened on the desktop version. I didn’t notice any problems when using my phone.

I think the issue started on Friday and went on through yesterday. Today, I haven’t had any problem yet – knock on wood! It certainly is quite annoying when you have to write comments in your word processor and then copy and paste them into a WordPress comment field!

Yep! I had that happening last week, probably starting around Thursday… it would let me type maybe four words then jump out of the comments to another post (from another writer even). Very frustrating, I figured it was either a brief, rare glitch or my computer or browser being quirky, but then found Max was having same issues. Was still doing so yesterday, though last couple of days I’ve been doing what he’d suggested, typing the comments elsewhere and copying and pasting. Hope they fix it soon! Thanks to both you and Max for getting on to WP about it.

Good to know but sorry you were affected by it, Dave. I saw the feed jump within the first 5 minutes of typing, but it hasn’t done it since and comments appear to be fixed. I’m glad we did also as it may have helped get them to see the urgency of it.
