  1. As weirdly overproduced as most ELO tunes are, many of them are really catchy symphonic pop songs, including “Mr. Blue Sky”. Oftentimes, it feels like they took The Beatles and applied a Phil Spector-on-steroids treatment!

I also love “Born to be Wild.” While these choppers are definitely cool, I’m just not a biker guy and trying would probably end badly. But riding across the U.S. in a cool ’60s Mustang convertible is something I could get excited about. Or in what I’ve always felt is the ultimate sports car: A Porsche 911. They also come as convertibles! :-)

I love the ELO sound, it pumps me full of energy like drinking caffeine. The learning curve with motorcycles is unforgiving as one mistake can mean maiming and/or death. A mustang or Porsche would be fine, but if I had convertible I’d want it to have a roll bar on it.

      1. I totally hear you regarding ELO. And, yes, having a roll bar sounds like a smart proposition, given the slight difference in acceleration between my sexy compact SUV and a Mustang or 911!😆

Love ELO! George Harrison once said that if The Beatles had remained together, they could have evolved to sound like ELO.

Irene, I can see where that might have happened! I know the George appreciated Jeff Lynne’s creativity and talent. The Traveling Wilburys went in another direction but only because of Willie and Roy, I think :)

nice little concise haiku! Man, the Great Lakes winters are something I don’t miss.
ELO were a great band, and little wonder the Beatles called on Jeff Lynne to help them with the remastering etc in the 90s. Steppenwolf… I WISH I liked a bit more to be honest, since they originated in my hometown and my dad even worked with John Kay briefly! Before they were Steppenwolf and LA-based and big, they were The Sparrows, and John went to school in a HS in my old hometown and then worked for a bit in a factory…alongside my dad!

I really love your insider information here. John Kay and your dad working together in your hometown is so cool, Dave. I would love to know more about that musical history if you have it (in a post someday, maybe?) I love the Steppenwolf music I’ve heard. I used to have the Monster album (my x probably still has it!) I appreciate the social consciousness of some of their lyrics.
