collage — modern bison

bison taken with phone (2)

A few weeks ago, while learning more about First Peoples and the American Bison that I had an idea.  In my collage cutout box with people are a million images of models with picture perfect hair, all made up, invariably gorgeous, all selling something.  I started to think this is what the Indigenous tribes were targeted for institutionalized, methodical genocide for, and by extension, their lifeblood, the bison?  The idea came to me of building a bison with that picture perfect hair and then placing the bison in the middle of the monstrous and addictive modern reality that we have built.  The front half of the bison is done with the hair and the back half has been painted.

I wanted to put the bison in the middle of a parking lot or a mall, but I didn’t have those images and didn’t want to draw them.  Instead, I put stainless steel in the sky and had the bison standing on a swath of bleach blonde hair.  The ancient pieces of architecture give balance of old with new.  The figure walking away in the top left represents spiritual rejection of being placed in such an environment.  The blood is on everything.

This collage was too big to put into the scanner so I took a picture of it with my phone.  Since I’m going to be “going big” more I need to problem solve for that.

Here is what the scanner was able to scan.  I’m including it so you can see better detail.
