Ushuaia Beach Hotel in Ibiza, Spain
Through the deep caves of thought
I hear a voice that sings:—
–by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.,
from The Chambered Nautilus
I’d promised to take myself on a February vacation; one that would get me away before winter end’s grey desperation set in. Unfulfilled for a decade, I’m now sprawled on a terrycloth-covered ergonomic lounge chair on Ibiza’s beach sand, wearing a straw hat and slathered with SPF-laced coconut oil. Sunlight pulses through my skin as the Mediterranean’s rhythmic laps drowse me into deep slumber.
I’m flying over blue waters, a cushion of air bathing me in cool as it tickles my arm and neck hairs. Through the deep caves of thought I hear a voice that sings. Looking to my right, there, on the hill, a small hut – and a man. He beckons me…
The waitress’ voice stirs me.
“Senora, una recarga en tu mojito?”*
It’s sunset and the resort’s tiki hut stage is lit. He’s playing his guitar, singing my life.**
[144 words]
*translation: Ma’am, a refill on your mojito?
**”singing my life” are lyrics taken from, “Killing Me Softly with His Song.” Learn more about the song writers here.
I am today’s host for dVerse’ Prosery Monday. I say:
Write a piece of flash fiction or other prose up of up to or exactly 144 words, including the given line from the poem.
One of my favorite songs! Good writing 🎶🖤

I like Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly” and a nice cocktail is a good proposition. I also would love to finally visit Spain for real (I only visited Barcelona once for a short day visit when I was 19 or so), but I’m not much of a beach and sun-bathing person. I’d be okay there for an hour or two. Then I would get bored! 🙂

Glad it sounds nice, Christian. I bet if you had headphones and a playlist you would calm right down under the beach umbrella as you sipped your drink 😉

Ha, that could be true – especially given I hardly drink and it doesn’t take to knock me out!😀

You’re welcome. I guess that’s true of many songs where a particular artist makes it his or her own.

I love the way you leave us to imagine the next scene, he beckons, his voice impacts, and there you are. Draws me in.

Paul, thank you. I think that’s the best part of a vaca, not knowing what might happen on one.

it’s strange how so many of the compositions are sad. This one too, though it should be a dream come true.

Jane, maybe because so many of us have been trained to hide our sorrows down deep? Maybe she’ll feel better as the night rolls on?
