After turning off the sound machine’s waves, walking to the toilet and hearing my morning tinkle, I pad down the carpeted hallway to the kitchen. Dotty gives a soft meow as she curls around my ankles. Where the floor registers’ heat poured silently from them, the new heating system whispers warm that is felt more than heard. Hot water percolates through the coffee maker as I open the blinds to the day.
A silent movie plays outside. Sunshine melts snow on the roof. It pours from the gutter; some lands in the bird bath, but most sputters in the wind. Cardinals, chickadees, and nuthatches trapeze between the bare limbs and the feeders. With an extra hanging silo of mixed seed rather than oilers, the mourning doves are back. Memories of their coos adds a soundtrack.
The clacks of my heavy-fingered keyboarding echo in the atrium as I click my way to the daily Wordle puzzle. It’s a tough one, and I dash paper with pen to do hard copy guesses on the five-letter word that begins with “A” and ends with “M.” More clicking finds just the right t-shirt for a holiday gift. Clacks have carried on to now as I write my haibun.
Window between worlds —
light and sound travel the realms
of touch and time.
Linda Lee Lyberg is today’s host for dVerse’ Haibun Monday. Linda says:
For today’s inspiration, we will focus on Autumn’s voice (aki no koe), such as rustling leaves, a late emerging cicada, crickets, an unexpected breeze, a crow’s call, etc.

What a perfect slice of life Lisa! And the music is superb as well.

Sounds like the beginning of a fabulous day, Lisa. We’re melting here as well. I know you had a ton of snow compared to us. LOL!

I was kind of surprised how much Grand Rapids got (as evidenced by the mounds on the outdoor furniture.)

We got around 4 inches. We’re just to the eastern side of the snow belt. It must be a sweet spot.

I felt like I was there with you as I read your haibun. Lisa (not for the morning tinkle though)! I am so familiar with the cats’ meows, and water in the gutter – not from snow but typical English rain. The only birds I’ve heard recently are geese. I don’t know if you’ve heard about our current bird flu epidemic, but I am scared I might never hear birdsong again. Another Wordler! We do it too and both got it in four today.

Oh no on the bird flu epidemic :(

Such a contrast between inside and out. I’m trying to imagine walking on carpet, with central heating and sitting down to the computer with coffee. Such a warm, lazy start to a cold, brisk day.

Oh Jane, I’m sorry to know you don’t know those small creature comforts. Once I got outside to haul the bins out to the road for trash pickup in the morning those cozy things seemed so distant so very quickly.

So vivid, Lisa :-)
Now you’ve got me wondering how “heavy fingered” I am!

lol, David. Let’s put it this way, I’ve typed the letters off of every keyboard I’ve had (mostly the home line.)

I love how you turned the clacking of the keyboard into an autumn Haibun. Very well done. I love the outside silent movies these days!

Thank you, Max. I’m keeping it at 60 for one month, which should be up in a few days, just to see what the electric bill will be. If it’s low I might crank it up to 62 :)
