Wise
In garden dwells a human sage
who gathers herbs for casts. A crone
with shelves of spells in jars, her nimble
shaman fingers mix. Voice intones
sleepy spells of ancient seer.
Skilled, she mixes with spoon of bones,
Expertly waves her wand, and Poof!
Savvy success! Arise a ghost!

Foolish
In ev’ry realm juggles a clown
whose brain has more feather than goose,
hen who twitters all over town,
flippant backflips in jello ponds,
tells bad jokes and dips smiles from frowns,
walks ‘round town blissfully blinkered,
always dizzy, some say unwound;
feckless, yes, yet entertaining.

My New Form: Syndom
Rules:  Choose a one-word title (the 65th word) using any word that has synonyms and write eight, 8-syllable lines that each includes a synonym of the one-word word title. Even-numbered lines rhyme with each other. Optional and considered a second poem because of word count: write one with the antonym of the original title and have odd-numbered lines rhyme.

Colleen Chesebro is the host of Tanka Tuesday.  Colleen says:

This week’s challenge is to create a syllabic form with 65 syllables, or a combination of words that amount to 65. Remember we have an entire week to write our poem.

Name the form, and tell us how to write it! I’ll add these new forms to the challenge cheat sheet so we can write them again. 🎂 🥳

Happy Birthday Colleen!

  6. Good one!

I especially love the imagery of “flippant backflips in jello ponds”, although I’m not sure I would like to do one!

  7. Cool! There’s a lot going on in a syndom. What struck me as I read these poems was the lilting rhythm provided by the rhyme scheme and regular syllabication.

Excellent word play. I hope Colleen puts all these new forms on a page! Some, like yours to me, seem a bit intimidating… But maybe one of these days –

    1. msjadeli says:

Thanks, Jules. It may look intimidating but if you use rhymezone for the synonyms pretty easy.

I’m not particularly a fan of writing rhyme (sonnets etc). Hopefully Colleen will add these forms to a special page so we can visit them and try them… maybe one day 🙂
