Tanka Tuesday 317 — Two Tankas

deer at dusk 0323

I watch deer at dusk
out my back slider before
turning on the lights;
as dark shrouds them, I wonder
are they still there — or just ghosts?

Breakfast cafe fare
of chai and vegan croissant,
sitting across from my son;
infinity rests with us
in this moment’s food and talk.

Colleen Chesebro is the host of Tanka Tuesday.  Colleen says:
Let’s go back to our roots and write a tanka poem (or two, or three) this week. I want you to find your own inspiration. Choose a photo, take a photo, share a walk with us… or a moment in time that was important to you. Capture this moment in a tanka or two.

    Both are wonderful captures Jade. I have a photo I attempted to take of a hawk on the rooftop across the street that looks very like your deer. They do seem like apparitions sometimes.
    “Infinity rests with us” is a wonderful thought. (K)

    Both of these are lovely and I particularly love the image of the deer – it’s like a monochrome impressionist painting!

      You know I’m always amazed at how good the camera is on my phone. How it picked up the deer in virtual dark is pretty cool.

    I enjoy watching the deer cross my yard. Sometimes a fox too. Only once did a skunk trigger our back lights. They tend to stay in the yards where the neighbors think they are doing a service by feeding ferel cats.

    Children and grands… Hard to see that some young people will not have either… DINKs… double income no kids… But to each their own.

      Lovely comment as always, Jules. I’ve seen possums, pheasant, turkeys, rabbits (not anymore though since the neighbor’s cats allowed to run wild outside have killed them all), lots of chipmunks and squirrels, and even sandhill cranes a few times in the yard. Never a skunk and hope to keep it that way (unless they spray those effin cats!)

        Oh… our phesants were taken out by an avian flu… we had them our first years here. Just last two years wild turkeys… coyote too!

          Oh so sorry to hear about the pheasants. Haven’t seen them here in a few years. I know the local tractor supply was selling the chicks for a few years. I saw a dead coyote by the side of the road about 10 years ago and have heard them a lot late at night but never saw a live one around here.

            We’ve all kinds of critters… in that little strip of land between the creek and the next neighborhood on the otherside. I’m sure the city folk don’t see as much, but the farms probably see more than we do.

            Our neighborhood is named after birds 🙂
