Earth Day 2023 EcoTrek Fitness, Happy Little Trees 5K Walk

Cari Draft, my fitness guru and founder of EcoTrek Fitness,
leading the Earth Day Walk at Hoffmaster
(that’s me lollygagging behind [i.e. struggling to keep up] with Cari’s husband, Jeff)

Several months ago I saw the Happy Little Trees program through the State of MI DNR and that they were having a 5K for Earth Day.  I wanted to contribute and participate and asked Cari if she would organize a walk.  She said she’d be happy to do it.  We met up at Hoffmaster State Park at 8 a.m. and headed out along the trail and into the dunes.  I got about a mile in and realized how woefully out of shape I am and so turned back.  I still have a few days to get the other mile or so in but my right instep is still quite tender and so will wait until it feels good again.

A selfie I took on my way back to the car.  It was in the 40s and quite beautiful out there!

A mile out and a mile back. Thanks, Carol Anne! It’s a wake-up call for me to start working my way up to fitness again.

Thank you, Barbara. I had 3 layers on and gloves and needed them all. That headband was good for the ears also.

  3. I agree with allowing your instep to feel right again before the next walk. It’s going to feel great when you finish.

My doctor told me I need to walk two miles a day, briskly. Ha! I can do 1/2 mile briskly, and one mile fairly easily. I can actually walk two miles, but it’s a very leisurely pace. I’m working on it…
But you look happy! And that looks like a great place to walk. (K)

Kerfe, I think you have focused on the crux of the matter, the pace. I can walk farther at a slower pace and there is pressure to keep up, knowing they were waiting for me, as Cari will stop the group and have them wait for stragglers. Once I knew the pressure was off and I was headed back (luckily had GPS and used it to go back the right way) I *was* happy lol. It is a good place to walk.

Kudos to you for going out there and doing your little bit (and admitting to not finishing it). Hope your foot gets better so you can go finish it! Just for that feeling of self-satisfaction.

Dale it’s one of those fundraisers where the money for trees was the purpose and that’s been paid. My foot is good today, and I was outside with my new loppers cutting back the briars and scrub trees with thorns on them. Got a lot done out there and now we just need some more warm weather (in low 40s.) I will get the remaining mile done for sure by the 28th.

That’s a wonderful thing and I’m happy for your foot! We are also in the mid 40s and so much rain. The water levels are ridiculous. I know you will!

Thanks much, Dale. It’s snowing in Grand Rapids (~45 mi away) and in Lansing (~90 mi away) but so far snow free here. The sun is even shining at this moment. Make sure you wear your waterproof boots out there walking, little lady.

You keep that white stuff (away from you and me), y’hear?
The sun was shining this morning, gave way to dark, grey skies and rain, cleared up a smidge so there are spots of blue sky amidst the clouds. I am hoping the rains stay away when I go out to meet two girlfriends for supper later.
