Today the sliders and a window are open and it’s 70+ F in the house. The sun has been shining all day. Glory be! I took a quick stroll around the yard and also had a mini-adventure.

I hope the bird is okay now. Love the greens and the yellow flowers.

How interesting about the bird’s “injury”! And the red pine reminds me of the TV show I’m watching right now, which is Three Pines (right now the difference between red pine and white pine is very important!).

The mother plover was a good actress and made a believer out of me! I had just been reading about avian flu and that’s where my mind went. I pray I’m wrong. What’s Three Pines about (besides pine trees 🙂 Series?/movie? fiction? doc? And…. the most important question…. why is the difference between red pine and white pine very important??? You have my curiosity going.

Have you ever read any Louise Penny mystery novels? The series is based on those books. White pine needles being found where you expect red pine needles is a clue haha. I hope she was just acting!!!

Aha! No I haven’t but the clue has my interest 🙂 Me too. I’ll go out there later and see what I see…

I’m geeked about the yard more than usual this year. It seems like winter lasted FOREVER.

It still keeps making returns, too, but today is actually supposed to be springlike for a change.

I just got back from a walk with my younger son, his wife, and the grandbaby. She loves to be out in nature and I love to see her joy in it.

Does galvanized steel never rust?? As you can see I’m not a metals person. That tree is a beauty and so are those pine trees. Having started the pine from seeds they are like my babies. Yes, the plover was VERY convincing, but she had no trouble flying a short distance away and doing it again.

Yes it will eventually rust but…it takes a lot longer for it to.
That tree is beautiful Lisa….I really like that.
Instinct in Animals floors me…how they know to do something….like we know to breathe…they know to do certain things like that.

Like what I see. Pines, always. Our garden is all busy being green – rosemary and ginko bush are happy plants. My odd question is – where’s the fence? Don’t see one. That would be sweet. Once, Cape Cod area, linear homes, so all back yards just opened to the the land behind. Lovely.

Sounds like you are a happy gardener also. The opening up of the yards in the suburbs sounds wonderful. My fences are falling down but the neighbors are far enough away that they don’t matter. Have a wonderful day!

This looks so lovely, Lisa. And 70s temperatures sounds great. It looks like that’s what’s in store with central NJ as well for the next few day. In fact, for Monday the forecast high is 77!

Good to hear it’s getting nice your way. I just came back from a walk with younger son, his wife, and the grandbaby in The Highlands in Grand Rapids. 77 is pretty high for May!

I know, 77 looks unseasonal. But after we’ve had a bunch of tornadoes – not quite comparable (yet) to tornado alley – nothing really surprises me any longer in lovely New Jersey!

Didn’t realize NJ had a bunch of tornadoes. Yipes!

It’s really insane. I mean when you have tornadoes in friggin’ New Jersey you really know that’s not normal!

Yes, I do, Randy 🙂 It’s kind of a little more than a yard. It keeps me busy.

Thanks, Dale. I went to the park with my younger son, his wife, and my toddler granddaughter and was telling them about the plover and son said he almost stepped on a plovers nest just recently and that the mother bird made those same motions, so I think she was. That said, I went out back to look a few minutes ago and she was nowhere in sight.

Silly birds, making their nests so low!

These birds live on the ground and nest on the ground. It’s a wonder that they aren’t extinct!

A great post Lisa. The green is really showing in your area. You planters look like a good place to grow your veggies. Will you get a truck load of dirt to fill it?
We have kill deer that nest on the ground among the rocks. They will do exactly what you described in pretending to be wounded to get you away from the nest.

Dwight, I had a truck load of dirt delivered 5+ years ago and a large portion of it is still in my driveway 🙂 You know those sunflowers I’ve grown? They’ve grown on “sunflower hill.” I covered the hill with mounds of pine needles that have fallen on the driveway and early this morning did a controlled burn. I will be wheel-barrowing dirt from the hill to the planters over the next couple of weeks.
Maybe that is a killdeer?? I have ponds and a creek running through the property so I thought she was a plover. Maybe not…

p.s. Just went out and looked at a bunch of pics. The type of plover that lives in Michigan doesn’t look like the bird I saw, but she does look like a killdeer that lives in MI. You are right again! You were right before on those hideous caterpillars on my young oak trees, and that my trees would survive 🙂

Ha ha… lucky guess. Killdeer are quite common. Hope you caterpillers don’t come back this year!
