A leak in the atrium killed my old PC (hard drive has yet to be determined alive or dead.) Just got this new one delivered and thankfully remembered my password for it and my email account. It’s going to be a royal pain if the old hard drive died, not only for all of the passwords but the loss of all writing and pictures (except what’s been saved on WP.) My printer drivers are not able to be upgraded as far as I know so that will mean buying a new printer. The scanner (which used to be a scanner/printer) shows that it is working. So much to figure out and it comes at a bad time, when I’m going for a job interview next week — yes, folks, I may have a full time job in the near future.
Will plan on responding to all comments soon. Wish me luck, on getting this new beast set up and on the interview next week.

Yikes, hope the hard drive is salvageable!

me too, Trent. I should have printed those passwords out. The thought of having to change them all… And yes the writing and photos are valuable to put it mildly.

Good luck with the hard drive, and also with the job!
I lost all my computer files about 20 years ago, and since then I try to be good about backing them up on a portable drive every few months that I keep in my storage room. I still regret some of that art I lost. Luckily it was before I took digital photos.
My passwords are kept the old-fashioned way, in a little book. Although I need to make a copy to also stash in the storage room. A task for the new year.

I should know by tomorrow if it’s still good (it didn’t appear to get wet, but when the power box (whatever it’s called) went out it could have done something to it. I had/have all passwords in a word file but I neglected to print it out :( Maybe I should have been storing everything in the cloud but then that has its own set of risks.

Yeah, I’m not sure the cloud is all that dependable either. Maybe we should just accept our ephemerality.

Thanks, Keith. We found out old hd wont fit in slot of new computer so son is ordering a device where it can be accessed externally. :::Fingers crossed:::

Bummer. My eight-year-old laptop died today, but the good news is that I hardly ever use it. I mostly use my iPhone.

Fandango sorry to hear about your laptop. Glad it was not your primary device. The new one works fine, but slower, and will have to wait to see if old hd works or I will be creating a mess of new passwords. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Oh, no! Lisa, that is a total bummer. There are few things in today’s busy social/technological world worse than the death of our computers. I can’t imagine it. Good luck with that task and with your job interview next week. Best wishes to you! 🤞🏼

Best Buy came to the rescue. Delivered at around 11 this morning. And free delivery. You can’t beat it. Thank you on the job interview. They must be hard up to give an old broad like me a chance.

Hi Lisa, I had the same thing happen to me in about October last year and I lost some stuff. My upsetting was a new poem and a new short story that was nearly finished and not saved anywhere else. I hope you can salvage your hard drive as I couldn’t. Best of luck with the job interview. That will result in some changes for you, working makes a big difference to your available time for other things, obviously.

Oh that’s not good. But seems you are getting things started up okay so far. I’d be okay with my passwords, as they are all written in a little notebook, and all photos are on my phone. Most of my stories are written in spirals first, but I’m sure I’d miss a lot of spur of the moment poems and things like that. Good luck on your interview!!! :)

LOL, Barbara. My son said the same thing about the notebook last night. I keep few pics on the phone. Some of my writing is in notebooks but not much; my hands don’t cooperate with writing like they used to. Happy you have your important things protected. Thanks on the luck, my friend :)

Good luck with the job interview and the changes full-time employment will bring, and with sorting out your hard drive. I hope it’s retrievable; computers are so great until they are not. It might be overkill, but I have everything in the cloud, plus an external HD, and another I keep at a brother’s and swap them periodically. A password manager is a really useful tool if, like me, you have countless passwords and want strong, different ones for every account. Good luck with it all!
Nice live version of Aerosmith! That one takes me back…

Steve, I appreciate your sharing of your methods of keeping data safe. I had a lot of passwords saved, and maybe I can sign into the old browser and find them?
Thanks for the benevolence on the interview. I really hope it works out. I’m ready for some productive change.
I love that live Aerosmith also. High energy and their passion for the music is clear.

You’re welcome, Lisa.
I would think you should be able to retrieve them, if they were saved in the browser. It might be worth checking in with the folks who sold you the new computer; they often have a lot of skill in that sort of thing.

I’m so sorry, Lisa. My hard drive gave up the ghost and I lost four years of pictures and writings. Why the hell did I not do regular back ups? Lesson learnt and I’m sending good vibes that your hard disk info is retrievable.

This sounds like a nightmare, Li, but it sounds like you’re getting through it.
When will you know about the drive–before or after the interview? Which, by the way–AWESOME! Hopefully something that struck your fancy that you really want to do…? Either way, still AWESOME! All the luck in this universe and the next!

Stacey it’s been a loooong 4 or so days! Adaptor was ordered yesterday (hopefully not from amazon!) by son and hoping it gets here soon.
Having a lot of time to think about things this winter while stoking the fire and a few incidents has pushed me into doing a job that suits my job skills. So nervous about the interview — I usually end up trying to be clever and put my foot in my mouth. Praying I can keep it together. Thanks much for the well-wishing, my friend. <3

I’m the same way, Li! But I either clam up entirely and my mind goes blank or I start babbling. Just take a deep breath and count to three! Sometimes I picture myself floating in space outside of the world. That helps! lol You’ll do great. Unless you already went and already did great! :)

Stacey, it was this morning. For me it is literally impossible to say how it went. The interviewers are always so nice but are really good at keeping poker faces. I found out there is one opening but I’ll remain in a hiring pool for 6 months. We’ll see what happens!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Interesting. Really good poker faces, huh? Well, it sounds promising. Even if, for some bizarre reason (lol) you didn’t get THIS slot, you still have 6 months to get hired. Can you talk about what the work is?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, I found out they operate 24/7 and have 100 people on first shift. Maybe something will open up in the next 6 months, but I did tell them I don’t want the early shift (have never been a morning person.) It’s for the State of MI and in the human service field, which is all I want to say about it.

Second… I know from wence thou hath been – I lost my photos on my phone. I’m going to have to get a new PC this year because of the old programming not being supported anymore. Hopefully the transfer won’t be as painful as yours seems to be.
I picked up one of those password books… It is very helpful. Especially for the accounts I don’t use often.
Hope you can get the atrium fixed so you can start your spring seeds! (((Hugs)))

Jules, thanks much on the job situation. It’s in their hands now.
I’ll be heartbroken if I lose the pics. Almost all pics shared on WP have been “shrunk” to minimize databytes used, so if the originals are lost it will be horrible. So many family pics :( This new computer is pre-loaded with Windows II and Edge browser by default. I’m beta testing Edge and so far so good.
Yes, older son has properly chastised me for not having a password book. I saved all passwords on a computer doc, so if I had had to take it in for repair the tech would have access to all of them. Will be buying one asap.
With the leak in the atrium, when the sun came out and melted everything, no drips. I already had the whole roof recaulked a few years ago, but they didn’t do a great job of it.
Yes in spring seeds! Soon! Looking forward to it.

As for a password book any lined blank book would do! :)

Me too, Max on being glad. This device costed $12 and makes all of the memory accessible. That said, son said they are not 100% reliable and often fail at some point.

Yes…you need to get the important stuff off of there Lisa. I would not trust that Hard Drive a lot. I have some like that…I use them for non important storage locally….but everything else I use a cloud storage.

Max, you trust the cloud more than I do. It’s like leaving your stuff in a storage unit.. Probably safe, but vulnerable, and you better pay your bill! lol
