Dawn Redwood

My adventure with Dawn Redwoods began in 2023.  There is no sense in reinventing the wheel, so if you want to see how it all began, go here.  There was another update in September 2023 here.  The final update, before today’s, in March 2024, was here.

The pictures above show you what they look like today.  There are 4 left from the original batch.  I tried another batch last year from the same seeds that were sent to me, and only one little bugger survived the winter.  It’s tiny, like the 3/24 update.  The first 4 have been repotted and they thrived all last summer.  I really think they might be ready to get planted in the ground this fall.

In a bit of serendipity, this past Sunday the fam and a friend met up at Hager Park, in Jenison, MI.  We noticed a magnificent pair of trees.  Daughter In-Law used her phone app on them and said, “Dawn Redwood.”  It was the first time seeing a mature tree.  My jaw dropped as I ran my hand along the butter soft bark.  These trees are mind-bogglingly awesome.  Not at all what I was expecting with the bark, the shape, the the height (not tall, but branching low.)  I’m thinking my baby trees can grow to adulthood here without falling over.

There are multiple species of trees, shrubs, etc. in this nature park, which also has a really nice playground area.  DIL also identified Japanese Elm trees, which I have never seen before, but oh are they beautiful!  The link will take you to a pic of a whole tree and info about them.

  1. Those trees are growing! I wonder if you planted in the ground, and this winter you covered the ground around the tree with pine needles to keep it warm?

Yes they are. Once they took off they sure started growing. Good idea on making sure they are insulated. They were in a freezing greenhouse all winter and did fine, but that wind can be vicious.

      1. Exactly. The winds are so bitter now. Not much moisture for us this winter, but oh, those winds!

There were 2 like that there, friends, side by side. Daughter in-law got several pics of granddaughter in her tree home. She loved it there. I hope they do also, Kerfe.
