For Sally
Our family moved to the mountain after my sister, Sally, got gang-raped in the city. Daddy, being a jack-of-all-trades, got what they call a quick reputation with his apple jack. He traded Ol’ Pete one of Mama’s second-hand quilts for a truckload of corn. Sally and I toted whisky bottles on deer paths to our neighbors while Daddy trucked down the mountain with crates to Capone’s waiting men.
Daddy got close with Billy and Ronny, the delivery guys. One time he gave them a truckload of crates for free, with a list of names. For Sally.

The names on that list will be quietly “disappeared.”
