I almost used this song for #SLS yesterday but I didn’t know if salt would be acceptable as a spice. I have to say this live version is music that strikes a chord.
The Small Faces were an English rock and pop band from London, founded in 1965. The group originally consisted of singer/guitarist Steve Marriott, bassist Ronnie Lane, drummer Kenney Jones and keyboardist Jimmy Winston, with Ian McLagan replacing Winston in 1966. The band were initially one of the most acclaimed and influential mod groups of the mid-1960s, with hit singles such as “Whatcha Gonna Do About It” (1965,) “Sha-La-La-La-Lee” and “All or Nothing” (both 1966.) From 1967, they evolved into one of the UK’s most successful psychedelic bands, achieving further hit singles including “Here Come the Nice”, “Itchycoo Park”, “Tin Soldier” (all 1967) and “Lazy Sunday” (1968,) the latter taken from their critically-acclaimed concept album Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake (1968,) which reached No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart.

I was a huge fan of the Small Faces. Such a great group. I even met them a couple of times at Top of the Pops. Also saw them in Carnaby Sweet. 💜💜

I remember Faces more than Small Faces, but this song makes me want to look into more of their music.

Kenny Jones makes a tremendous amount of sound from a small drum kit. One of my favorite drum parts ever is his playing on “(I know) I’m Losing You” on Rod Stewart’s album “Every Picture Tells a Story”. (A great cover in general, but the drumming puts it over the top. Interesting that on the live video the announcer credits Steve Marriot as lead singer, even though the lead on that song was sung by Ronnie Lane.

I remember that drumwork on that song. My best friend’s older brother had the album and I remember hearing it playing at one of the brother’s parties.
I do love how Kenny gets on it in Song of a Baker. I also wondered about how he credits Steve, as well as why they had Ronnie so far back on the stage.

I’m not sure if I have ever heard any of their music before now, but for sure a couple of the band members I do have familarity with. Those psychedelic sounds of theirs take me (way) back in the day, Lisa.

Bruce, happy it takes you back. I love how they give it their all. I remember watching an Obama-produced series, set in Atlanta, called, “Later Daters” on Netflix and Steve Marriott’s ex-wife was one of the later daters. I remember reading that Steve’s son from that marriage is also a musician.
