POPO 2026 Day 17

PNC connection

In MI, we have PNC bank
Banks are warm and fuzzy if
you’re a billionaire or you’re in,
“It’s a Wonderful Life.”
PNC is not an acronym for banks
part of a larger financial empire.

In court lingo, PNC is code for,
“pleads no contest” to a crime,
meaning one is not guilty but
is not innocent either.
Gouging, threatening, fee-ing
are not innocent at all.

I just Looked her up. I like that era. I’ve recently read about Neysa McMein and Dorothy Parker…McMein was such a great artist…commercial illustrator but great.

blurb on McMein from wiki: “American illustrator and portrait painter (1888-1949)
Neysa Moran McMein was an American illustrator and portrait painter who studied at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and Art Students League of New York. She began her career as an illustrator and during World War I, she traveled across France entertaining military troops with Anita P. Wilcox and Jane Bulley and made posters to support the war effort. She was made an honorary non-commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps for her contributions to the war effort. McMein was a successful illustrator of magazine covers, advertisements, and magazine articles for national publications, like McClure’s, McCall’s, The Saturday Evening Post, and Collier’s”

I looked at her work and can see why you liked it.

With Pearl Buck, the only think I know about her beyond the quote is a book _The Good
Earth_ that I read back in high school. Do not remember much about the book except that I think it was set in China (I could be wrong.)

She was a smart, intelligent, talented, and a beautiful lady…she hung out with the Algonquin Roundtable and held her own. That is saying something…that group of artists, writers, and jerks at times.

No I don’t remember. I knew her name when I read this but could not remember much about her. It’s been a long time. I do remember that book.

First time coming across the word necrocapitalism. What a perfect term for it.

Yes, when I encountered it I had the same reaction. It is death for sure.

  3. That court-lingo connection is absolute brilliance. It is always so much fun when a post wanders into classic illustrators and literary history in the comments.

Pearl Buck is a great writer. I used to read her book, The Big Wave to my children when I was teaching school.
My bank here is PNC also.

It is a great tidal wave story from a little boy’s perspective.
