The prompt for today: write a poem (any form; rhyming or not) that includes the word “shed” or a form of the word.
The offering today is in the form of a diamante.

I like the movement from what I perceive as a bit more negative to the positive. “sloughing” — great word…I even like the sound of it!

Thank you, Maggie. I tried to pick a good antonym to go with it for the diamante.

Sometimes things have to be cast off. Nice photo to go with this.

Thanks for including the link to the form. Interesting! Love the poem and photo. There’s something weirdly fascinating for me about cicadas. They are so, so ugly, and yet…

I know what you mean about cicadas, there is a fascination for me also. Their life cycles, their vulnerability, their heralding a particular time of summer. Scary close-up though!

Many years ago, in Cincinnati, it was the BIG hatching of the things. They aren’t so fascinating when you have to crunch crunch crunch over them on a sidewalk. Singly, kinda cool.

Some only crawl out of the earth once every 17 years. The idea of crunching them underfoot makes me sad but I realize there were so many unavoidable. One of them got into my house accidentally years ago and was perched by the light over the kitchen sink. I called for help from my sons. They came over. One was able to knock it into a mason jar. The thing went berserk and vibrated itself to death :(

I think this was the 2008 hatching of the 17 year kind, and yes, there were parts of Cincinnati, particularly where sidewalks were under old trees (which is a large portion of the city), where you couldn’t help but to step on some (or their empty shells). It was more than disturbing. :)

When you hear that sound they make in the hottest part of the summer, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind?

I have no idea! (And I just thought about it.) What’s yours?

We’ve never had an “infestation” so when I hear them I know summer has reached its hottest point. I love the sound of them.

Thank you, Rob. With that form, at the halfway point, you can continue with a synonym or an antonym. The only ones I’ve done so far are antonyms but may have to try a synonym once to see how it goes…

That’s a very energetic diamante, Jade, a cocoon full of verbs and action. It seems to me whatever is inside can’t wait to fly free! I like the shift from negative to positive. Great image too!
