Thanksgiving Alone
Dawn, cold November
Snowflakes blanket a grey sky
Wet firewood smokes
Warm hearth’s gatherings distant
No footprints lead to my door
Frank J. Tassone is the host of Haiki Challenge. Frank says:
This week, write the haikai poem of your choice (haiku, senryu, haibun, tanka, haiga, renga) that alludes to Thanksgiving.

This poem comes across as solemn, but not sad. I rather liked it.

I learned that sweet potatoes with marshmallow sauce is a traditional accompaniment to the turkey. I reckon you’re well out of it. Alone with the pristine snow and a wood stove sounds much more inviting.

I like the ambiguity. Being alone can be sad, but it can also be welcome. (K)

There are times when alone and lonely do not equal out.
And many are thankful for that time any day it does happen.
There is a peace to this piece that reads ‘I’m OK’, I can communicate when I want, if I want.
(The ‘net’ gives us more ears sometimes than we want…)

All true, Jules. Each one’s circumstance gives it a different meaning. Someone from a chaotic environment all of the time would probably pay good money to get a piece/peace of solitude, where the ordinarily person of solitude might feel a twinge of loneliness.

There’s something satisfying about giving thanks alone, it’s private and intimate, especially against the backdrop of snowflakes and smoke.

Really nice imagery that build-up to add a wallop to the final line. I think maybe you didn’t need the word “Alone” in the title, but otherwise the poem is really good and I enjoyed it.
