Jim Adams is the entertaining host of Song Lyric Sunday. Jim says:
Look for songs that are written or sung by someone named Tom/Dick/Harry or a song that includes one of these names in the lyrics.
Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not. If it does not fit, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.
Radiohead from l. to r. Colin Greenwood, Jonny Greenwood, Thom Yorke, Philip Selway, Ed O’Brien
I wrote about “Lotus Flower,” a song from the “King of Limbs” album and written by Thom Yorke and the rest of Radiohead here. Thom is an alternate spelling of Tom and so I think it satisfies the prompt. There is something so hypnotic about the way he dances here. It’s a video I’ve watched many times.
Lotus Flower
I will shape myself into your pocket
Invisible
Do what you want
Do what you want
I will shrink and I will disappear
I will slip into the groove and cut me off
And cut me off
There’s an empty space inside my heart
Where the weeds take root
And now I’ll set you free
I’ll set you free
There’s an empty space inside my heart
Where the weeds take root
So now I’ll set you free
I’ll set you free
Slowly we unfurl
As lotus flowers
‘Cause all I want is the moon upon a stick
Just to see what if
Just to see what is
I can’t kick your habit
Just to fill your fast ballooning head
Listen to your heart
We will shrink and we’ll be quiet as mice
And while the cat is away
Do what we want
Do what we want
There’s an empty space inside my heart
Where the weeds take root
So now I’ll set you free
I’ll set you free
‘Cause all I want is the moon upon a stick
Just to see what if
Just to see what is
The bird lights float into my room
Slowly we unfurl
As lotus flowers
‘Cause all I want is the moon upon a stick
I dance around the pit
The darkness is beneath
I can’t kick your habit
Just to feed your fast ballooning head
Listen to your heart
Songwriters: Colin Charles Greenwood / Edward John O’brien / Jonathan Richard Guy Greenwood / Philip James Selway / Thomas Edward Yorke
I’ve also chosen to include a very interesting conversation between Thom and Stephen Colbert from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October 2019 where they are discussing Thom’s newest solo album, Anima and some other compelling subjects.

Li you mentioned that you found his dancing to be hypnotic and he seemed to be mimicking Charlie Chaplin to me. The Thom Yorke and Stephen Colbert was very interesting.

Very well could be mimicking The Little Tramp, which is ok with me. Yes, these two are creative geniuses, Yorke and Colbert. Both have a sense of humor also. I may have to read that book, “Why do we dream?” I started to watch some series on netflix about the human mind and when they said that dreams mean absolutely nothing, I knew they hadn’t a clue what they were talking about so stopped watching after one episode.

I’m familiar with Radiohead, but not this song. Thom’s dancing is quite expressive! :)

When I see him dancing it is like he was plugged into an outlet with too much voltage :)

This is a very inspiring post. I am not familiar with Radiohead’s music. Thom Yorke is wonderfully articulate. I want to learn more about sleeping and dreaming,.. I am looking forward to reading more thoughtful blog posts in 2020!

Radiohead are a group I would characterize as musical pioneers. Thom Yorke uses his voice in ways that are amazing, not to mention the lyrics. I look forward to reading/listening to more of your posts as well.

The interview was really good. I like how he described things as an observer rather than just jump in. You knew what he thought but he was really classy about it.

Yes, he kind of reminds me of you in that regard.

I don’t know if that is good or bad lol… I always take the cautious route until I know everything…unless it’s baseball or the Beatles!

It was meant as a compliment. You’re always a gentleman but you get your opinion out.

Have you seen the Peter Jackson one, “We Shall Not Grow Old”? If so, how does it compare?

Yes I have…I loved that… Well since this is a movie it’s different…but it looks real…they have that era down to a tee. Very good acting but the most impressing thing… Almost the entire movie looks like it was done in one shot…they had to rehearse forever to make it that way.

Wow! How is that possible??? Will have to check and see if it is playing around here.

They made most of it like that…6 months rehearsal time. Mark my words…it will be copied after this. It gives you a new take on a story.

I can only remember one song by Radiohead which is Creep, and I like that one. This video is interesting, and the song is good. :)
