Reena’s Exploration Challenge #130 — Same as it ever was

Once in a Lifetime made me think of the song by Talking Heads with that for the title. The lyrics in the song examine a person’s life through the choices and their responses to those choices. The song could be a template, where you could customize it with the experiences you’ve had based on your choices and the questions those choices and experiences raise. The reality is that each moment of our lives is a unique, converging intersecting opportunity, where our choices shift the configuration of the all. I think they call it the butterfly effect. I used to think that minutely examining past moments and trying to troubleshoot and learn from them was the most valuable thing to do to have a better quality of experiences in the future. The shocking realization that the now was being left out of the equation hit me hard right between the eyes. My now has been languishing for what seems forever. Once in a lifetime is RIGHT NOW.

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was

Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Water dissolving and water removing

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again into silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

You may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
You may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself
“My God! What have I done?”

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Look where my hand was
Time isn’t holding up
Time isn’t after us
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was
Letting the days go by
Same as it ever was
And here the twister comes
Here comes the twister

Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Same as it ever was (same as it ever was)
Letting the days go by (same as it ever was)
Same as it ever was
Once in a lifetime
Let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by

I tried to get tickets to see his show on Broadway but they were unbelievably expensive. My daughter told me they had filmed it though and were going to release it that way.

It was a short run–finished just before the pandemic hit. Although it was supposed to come back for another short run in the fall. “American Utopia “

I just went out and watched a clip of them doing, “Burning down the House.” Looks fabulous! I’ll be looking for that DVD.

A quote I never forgot once read: “One foot in the past, one foot in the future, and pissing on the present.” If we ever get out of our prisons, I might try starting to live in the now.

I so love this song. I remember a drummer did the “same as it ever was” in high school with his hands when he was frustrated by us not playing much….But I didn’t hold it against the Talking Heads…love that geek.
