#FF — Blended

Mom liked Butch best. Bedridden and looped up on meds left dad playing her nursemaid. He helped me as he could.

Men came and went. When I had my first child, I was on my own — and for the four that followed. I bartended while the oldest watched the rest.

Mick was a quiet man who tipped well. His wife had walked out on him and their two boys; they’d moved in with his folks. Mick and I married six months later and they moved in with us.

His mom didn’t play favorites. She made the best Christmas cookies.

So much pain and injustice and finally love. And a mother who didn’t play favourites taking us right back to where the pain started with the mother who did. There’s so much in this short story.

  26. A well written story, almost a mini novel. All that family history and a future too. I wasn’t clear what ‘His mom didn’t play favorites’ meant.

    1. Lisa or Li's avatar msjadeli says:

Thank you, WWM. That line is paired with the first line where her own mom played favorites with her brother.
