TSM 236 — Passed By

Remember the day when bluebirds flew through?
I thought for sure they’d at least stop and rest
on the window ledge, but no, onward they passed,
fast, headed for another place to take respite.

Instead I heard a quack. Parting the curtains,
my pale, pinched face looked down.
On the ground was a Muscovy duck,
looking up at me.

Well, I’ll be,” she said. “I’ve been looking for thee.
You see, I’ve been down on my luck, an unlucky duck,
you might say. But today is my lucky day.”

She ruffled her feathers and waddled away.

Throwing my coat, boots, and gloves on,
I followed her along the long-untrod grassy path
to the pond out back. She and I were joy-flustered with
the sight of a school of golden koi wiggling under
the wind’s ripples.

The largest one, with silver fins,
poked her head from the water and said,
We’ve been waiting for you. What took you so long?”

What a sweet, uplifting poem, Li.
I love communing with animals. I love the fact that the little dogs around the corner run up to the gate with their tails wagging when they see me but bark at other people, hehe. I love the very weird and varied sounds crows make. They’re so smart! My husband was sitting alone in a park once–sorry if I’ve told you this story already–and someone laughed behind him. He turned around. No one there. It came again: “Ha….ha…ha…ha…” He started getting REALLY perturbed. Looked up. A crow was staring down at him from the tree. Then it opened its beak and THAT’S WHO WAS LAUGHING! True story. I guess they’re just amazing mimickers, lol !!!
