Yuri had been a teaser from day one.
“Your skin is the white of curdled milk.”
“Where’d you find that dress? At the circus?”
It had been part of a mildly aggravating yet electric courtship between them. Yuri made Hilda laugh which helped make a sweet sauce for midnight desserts.
Twenty years later, his teasing had a hard, mean edge.
The day they walked along the woods, Yuri said, “Your ass is broad and dirty, like a dump truck.”
Hilda revealed her witchcraft to Yuri by turning him into poison ivy. He wouldn’t need the foot brace anymore.

There was a mean edge to him from the beginning

I think you’re right, Neil. She just didn’t want to see it, or was blinded by lust/love…

I don’t know, he might like being poison ivy. You know, irritating, getting under people’s skin and all. Perhaps he’d like being a petunia much less… lol, either way, I’m sure a better plant than human.

She held that knowledge in for a long time, so really must have pissed her off that time. 🙂 Love the line “a sweet sauce for midnight desserts.” Great writing.

I agree, she held it in well, but for only so long. Thanks and glad you enjoyed that line, David 🙂

Dear Lisa,
She must’ve really loved him to wait that long to unleash on him. Not sure she should’ve turned him into poison ivy, rather strike him with it forever.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Rochelle, you’re right, he should have been so afflicted. Thanks for that new perspective.

Well done, Lisa. A happy ending with dashes of hot flashes and revenge. 🙂

“dashes of hot flashes” I love it! Very likely it was what pushed her over the edge…

Sometimes it takes time to be pushed to the edge. I enjoyed her choice for his fate…poison ivy for someone who spews poison. Creative!!

I am surprised it took Hilda so long to exercise her revenge.

Maybe it wasn’t revenge as much as “enough is enough” and a moment of insanity, even though the … deserved it. I admire her restraint but perhaps she just kept hoping he’d change and the years went by… Thanks for reading and your comment, James.

What is it about that mean edge that makes us seek that person’s approval? It’s not a good way to live, but Hilda came out better for it in the end.

I just realized that I phrased that wrong. I didn’t mean she was better for the verbal abuse. I meant she was better for being rid of him.

I think so also. There’s a fine line between the two, and sometimes even the target of it isn’t sure — until they are.
